Bowmanville, March 9. 1988 ( sporf-tilk M FLASHBACK -- 25 YEARS AGO -- The Clippers and the Royals, both local teams, were eliminated from the Town Hockey League on Sunday by Orono and Bowman- ville in the semi-final series. In Wednesday's games, Bowmanville took the Royals by a score of 6 to 1 and Orono defeated the Clippers 6 to 4. In the first game. Bill Lyle (2), Lloyd Hamilton, Bill Ellis, Nelson Yeo and Bill Cole scored the six goals for the Bowmanville squad, while the only goal for the Royals was scored by Bob Holmes. In the second game, Eric Carlton was the big gun for the Orono Orphans, scoring three of his team's six goals with Terry Carlton, Phil Long and Gary Cooper netting one each. The four goals netted by the Clippers were by Brian Rowe (2), Sherman Shields, and Howard Quinney. LOCAL RACER MAKES NASCAR DEBUT -- Randy MacDonald, of Hampton, made his debut on the NASCAR NASCAR Busch Grand National circuit at Rockingham, North Carolina during the weekend. Randy is a previous previous winner of the Rookie of the Year award on the NASCAR North/Coors Tour during 1985. Last year, he took Rookie of the Year honors in the popular Canadian Canadian General Motors/Players challenge Series. Randy is driving a Banjo built 1988 Buick LeSabre with a Jim Ruggles Buick engine under the hood. This year, Randy will be competing in at least eight major Busch races which will take him to Darlington, Dover, Bristol, Bristol, Martinsville, Charlotte, and Oxford Plains. PINE RIDGE TOURNEY -- Although many of the BMHA-Toro teams are winding their season down, the number two teams are winding themselves up for the annual Pine Ridge Hockey Tournament. This event takes place March 11, 12, and 13 at the Bowmanville and Darlington arenas. Teams from as far away as New Jersey, Sarnia, Woodstock, Penetanguishene, Orillia, Bramalea, East Gwillimbury, Guelph, and Oshawa, will be participating. All championship games are Sunday, March 13, at the Darlington Arena. BASEBALL NEWS--The Town of Newcastle Baseball Association will be holding registrations in the Bowmanville Bowmanville Mall this month. There will be registrations on Friday and Saturday, March 18 and 19 and also the 1 following week on March 25 and 26. This, was a hard fought game with the truckers getting the tie with only one minute left in the game. "" On Saturday, March 6, Canadian Tire in Finals The Canadian Tire Major Atom Toros have advanced to the Ontario quarter finals by defeating Trenton three games to none and one tie. At press time, the C.T. Toros were waiting for the winners' of Owen Sound and Aurora. C.T. Toros 2 Trenton 1. Defensive hockey and f oalkeeping is what playoff ockey is all about. Steve Oke got the call for the third straight game, and with help from the defence held the Trenton team scoreless for the first and very crucial third period. Ryan Robinson got the C.T. Toros on the score sheet with just over a minute gone in the game. A slap shot from just inside the blueline that never left the ice, caught 1 the Trenton goalie sleeping. The third period saw Steve Oke make several key saves but Trenton once again took several unnecces- sary penalties late in the game which weakened their attack. C.T. Toros 3 Trenton 1. Discipline and team play made C.T. Toros victorious in this series. A very undisciplined undisciplined group of hockey players probably cost Trenton Trenton at least one or two wins in the series. In this very crucial crucial game, the Trenton club took 10 penalties to C.T. Toros Toros 3, and with less than a minute to play, Trenton took 4 penalties on one play. Ryan Robinson shook off his pre-game butterflies, scoring on a solid effort just 10 seconds into the game. The C.T. Toros came right at Trenton in the first five minutes minutes but failed to capitalize mainly due to a lot of bad passing. The second period saw the C.T. Toros lay back and #9 for Trenton, Johnny Lombardi tied the score. Lombardi was definitely Trenton's leader, but was in the sin bin nt a very important important time in each game. This was a hard fought game with the truckers truckers notching a 5 to 4 victory. Mark Read got the 1st goal for the truckers. Mike Talotti picked up the truckers' 2nd goal ana also the 3rd goal with Mark assisting. Early in 3 picking up the assist. Hope notched another the 3rd oeriod Port Hope tied up the game but five minutes into the 3rd period Mark gave the truckers the lead. Less than a minute later Mark scored again with Mike Port hope goal to make this a very interesting interesting game. The 3rd game found the truckers up against Grafton for the "A" championship. The truckers only had a one hour break before this game. It was the same old story with Grafton registering a 6 to 3 victory. Les, Chad and Mark notched the goals for the truckers. The truckers should be veryproud of their showing and how work hard for^their hvm "playoffs. The Hutton Transport team would like to thank Port Hope for inviting them to their tournament. Just before the Junior C hockey game between the Goodyear Eagles and Cobourg Cobourg Cougars got under way here Sunday night, a special presentation took place to Chris Dreossi of the Eagles.
