At the April 6th council meeting, the regional planning planning committee put forward a recommendation to request request the Ministry of Transportation Transportation and Communications Communications (MTC) begin a multimodal multimodal transportation system study for the Region. Regional Council accepted accepted that recommendation. Over the next 15 years the population of the Region is projected to grow to approximately approximately 500,000. Since 1960 the traffic along the 401 has steadily increased and the expansion of the highway has become inevitable. "This recommendation will show the Province that we want a wider highway with proper interchanges. It's important to get these immediate needs met as soon as possible," explained the Commissioner of Planning, Planning, Dr. Mofeed Michael. A study is presently under way for the section east of Brock Road in Pickering to Courtice Road in Newcastle to determine the best widening widening alternatives. The section through Oshawa will present the biggest challenge because of the existing development development abutting the highway. highway. The MTC has recommended recommended construction of a core/collector system eastward eastward from the Metro boundary boundary to Brock Road in Pickering Pickering beginning in 1988. The completion date for'the project project will be 1997. At this later date, construction would commence on the 401 expansion expansion east of Brock Road to Oshawa. By 1990 it is estimated ■ traffic volumes within the Whitby to Oshawa section will reach 70,000 daily vehicle vehicle trips. Councillors admitted during during the meeting that a highway highway expansion will not be enough to meet the growing traffic problems facing the Region. Other methods of transportation have to be investigated investigated by both the Region Region and MTC. "We're going to have to look closely at Durham's system system of transportation. Our public transit (GO System) will have to be expanded to meet the needs of commuters commuters in the future. A simple highway expansion won't be enough," said the Commissioner Commissioner of Planning. Letter to the Editor Dear Editor: Enclosed is a letter directed directed to you and the public on a topic which I feel needs to be expressed from more than the negative viewpoint it is presently getting. As many people in our community know, a Catholic High School by the name of St. Stephen's exists in the. Wnverley area, Recently, it was discovered that this school has established itself, well enough to receive new' facilities. I am a student at Bowmanville High School and with this announced move, St. Stephen's is receiving receiving a great deal of attention and talk in my school's halls. Many of our students put down St. Stephen's because it is run differently than a public school. Having a school uniform, taking religion religion classes and having a; stricter discipline policy are the only real differences I have seen when talking with friends who go there. I would like to take this opportunity to tell the students students of Bowmanville High School and even Courtice Secondary School, that St. Stephen's may not have very many students, but they are still no different than any other kids, anywhere. I hope that other people share my view and can see that a put- down or joke about St. Stephen's Stephen's is not funny. Sincerely Interested Student, B.H.S. Help keep Red Cross ready.
