Artistic Roller-Skating Gains Popularity Roller skating could soon be an Olympic spectator sport. But it isn't the Saturday skate-around-the-rink type of roller skating. It's artistic roller skating and it's becoming becoming very popular. Bowmanville resident, Barbara Gould, is one such lady who would like to see the various artistic aspects of the activity highlighted at an- upcoming Olympics. Several years ago, Mrs. Gould was out for an evening evening with friends from work. She found her inability to roller skate "frustrating" and decided to do something about it. She has translated that frustration into victories at the national competitions in both 1986 and 1987. "It was a personal goal I set for myself," explains Mrs. Gould. Her efforts are also being recognized by the Ontario Ministry of Tourism and Recreation. Mrs. Gould is one of more than one thousand thousand athletes who will be honored in April with a 1987 Athlete Achievement Award. The awards are bei ng given for championship performance performance in amateur sport at national, international and world levels of competition. The talented skater, who has had her amateur card for four years, competes in the figures event. She began? in the dance free-style cate- ' gory doing solo work and later changed to figures. A typical week includes five practices at a rink in Whitby. The skater's philosophy is simple: "You've got to prac tice to be good." And good is what she intends intends tobe again this year at both the provincial competitions competitions in Burlington during May and the national level skating in Toronto in July. Mrs. Gould is modest when asked about her chances for a repeat champi-' onship performance. Yet, if dedication and hard work count for anything, the skater skater should do extremely well. One day she might even have the chaftce to "bring home the gold." Don't Get Caught When It's Hot Be Kool... . . t-iv if?*?* Vh**fW k ") ti •Htr'rto It fofc vs wH Ih&br V? JR K M ,>> *•> £ft !
