The week-end of May 27- 29 will bring chili connoisseurs connoisseurs from tar and wide to the 9th Annual Great Pine Ridge Chili Cook Off. The three-day event is formerly known as the CHOO Chili Cook Off. While the name may have changed, organizers organizers don't expect that to hurt the very popular yearly happenings. happenings. This year's cook off is being being run by the Newcastle Lions Lions Club. Lions members Brett Rickard and Roy Watts report that the organizational organizational process is well underway for the chili extravaganza. The first cook-off was held nine years ago when the CHOO radio station got "accidentally involved" in the event, according to Lor- na Braid, community affairs and public relations manager manager for the station. Since that time, the station has engineered the yearly chili cook off while at the same time looking for a service service club or group interested in taking over the event. Enter Enter the Newcastle Lions Club and the search is over. Although CHOO radio has given up the official sponsorship of the weekend they are by no means out of the cook off business. Mrs. Braid is working hand in hand with the Newcastle Lions Lions Club and Orono Fairgrounds Fairgrounds management to promote the cook off and ensure ensure its success. Mrs. Braid sees no reason why the event shouldn't attract attract four to five thousand people over the three days in May. "The event is people working together," said Mrs. Braid. She estimates that it will take 400 volunteers to help out in all aspects of the cook off. The highlight of the weekend must surely be the chili cooking itself. The competition competition is tough and everyone everyone has a secret recipe. Saturday is devoted to making Texas style chili. In order to qualify for the competition competition the only thing that can show in the chili is the meat. Texas chili recipes don't contain any fillers (such as beans) ana the spices, spices, onions and garlic give it the southern flavor that has won cook offs all across the country. After that, the* rest of the recipe is up to the' imagination. There are four cooks per team and the top ten teams will receive prizes for their culinary efforts. Ron Locke, manager of the Durham Central Agricultural Society (which looks after the Orono Fairgrounds) explains that the judging is very serious business indeed. Even the judges have judges, as several several monitors are present throughout the taste testing to ensure that everything goes smoothly. Mr. Locke also reports that planning for other events during the week-end is well underway. There will' be horseshoes, activities for the children and plenty of entertainment. Friday, May 27, will be an arrival and set up day for many out-of-town travellers. bluegrass band will entertain early in the afternoon, with the Texas style chili judging to take place later in the day. More music will be heard later later in the afternoon with a public dance in the arena Saturday night. Sunday will be much of the same thing all over again. The day will begin with another pancake breakfast breakfast from the Orono DB1A. The cooks will get busy mak ing Canadian style chili and more judging will happen on Sunday afternoon. The CHOO radio station has donated the cup for the winner of the Texas style chili competition and various other prizes will also be awarded. For the Newcastle Lions Club, co-ordinating the chili cook off will be quite a challenge. challenge. An important feature of the occasion was the rededication rededication of a plaque which belongs in Tyrone church, but had been removed at a time of renovation of the church. Mr. Harold Clemens, St. Catherines, Ontario, who is a former resident of this area, had the plaque restored, restored, as it was in memory of his brother-in-law, John Otho Staples, who was killed in action in France, on April 9,1917, at the age of twenty.
