New Season for Ball Hockey at Darlington FLASHBACK -- 10 YEARS AGO -- Hugh Allison, a marathon runner from Maple Grove, ran in the Boston Marathon on April 17, and completed the 26 mile course in his fastest time ever, of two hours, 38 minutes minutes and 15 seconds. This is the tenth year he has raced in the Boston event. BASEBALL OPENING -- The Newcastle Lakers of the Eastern Ontario Baseball Association Senior Division will open up the season on Saturday, May 14, in Markham Markham against the Markham Shamrocks at Bishop Cross Park at 4:30 p.m. and on Sunday afternoon, May 15, they play their home opener against the Markham Shamrocks Shamrocks at the Village Park in Newcastle Village. Game time is one p.m. Manager John Robinson will have some new faces in the lineup plus veteran players like Doug Rickard, Craig Hornby, Timm Jenkins, Brad Kelly and Bruce Austin. MOJACKS CAME CLOSE -- The Port Perry Mojacks made it all the way to the Ontario Finals in their 1987- 88 Junior C hockey series. Unfortunately, they bowed out on Sunday when the Mooretown team won their fourth and deciding game on Port Perry's home ice. The score was 3-2. Well, there's always next year. Of course, the Bowmanville Jr. C Eagles will be in action next year and they're due for an all-Ontario crown. BOWIMANVILLE TENNIS CLUB - Registration took place May 6 to 8 at the Bowmanville Tennis Club on the weekend. Features of the club include free lessons for new members and juniors. Harvey AT MOSPORT -- The season-opener will be May 21, 22 and 23 when the Victoria Day Sprints take place. The weekend includes the RACE-sanctioned Castrol National Series for all classes of motorcycles, including including the Motorcycle Grand Prix for Pro Superbikes plus supporting auto races. After that, there's the Formula Atlantic Weekend slated for June 17,18 and 19. SENIORS' GAMES -- Events such as carpet bowling, euchre, golf, and darts may not be part of the '88 Olympics Olympics but they're all components of the 1988 Durham Senior Games which take place this month and next. The entry deadline for a few of the sports has passed, but most events are still open to receive competitors. Locally, the Ayren Links Golf and Country Club on Taunton Rd. E. will host the golf competition oh Wednesday, June 22. Entry deadline is Wednesday, June 15. BASEBALL SEASON OPENS -- Training has been going on for some time now. However, the official i opening of the '88 baseball season takes place next weekend, Saturday, May 21 and Sunday, May 22. Garnet spoke of the major challenge the people of Bowmanville have to meet, the fundraising fundraising objective of 1.1 million dollars for our new recreation recreation complex. Captain Brian Heard recapped recapped his six years as an "Eagle", giving special recognition recognition to nis teammates over the years, former coaches^ and executive members, especially especially Pat Marshall whom he thanked for being a big help to him. He gave special thanks to his parents for their understanding and sunport. Brian finished his presentation by very capably capably reading a poem written by teammate Mike Colwell the most efficiently touched on the highs, lows, and memories memories of the 1987-88 hockey season. Coach Pat Lange thanked the players and the executive for the privilege of coaching the team. He touched on the positive points of the year, commenting on the pride he felt to have throe members on the All-Star Team and seeing Chris Dreossi win the league M.V.P. and High scorer. Manager Weldon Brown thanked all involved for sev eral years of enjoyable participation participation in various positions positions with the team. He stated that his personal satisfaction satisfaction from helping and working with the boys is his greatest reward.
