Hampton is Home of Championship Hall Hockey Teams HOCKEY MEETING -- In an effort to continue their support for adult hockey, the Ontario Hockey Association Association will be convening a meeting of interested parties who would lend themselves to entering teams for the 1988-89 hockey season in the OHA's Senior/Intermediate Senior/Intermediate recreational hockey leagues. If you are interested interested or know of anyone who might consider organizing organizing a team or league please contact the office of the OHA between nine a.m. and four p.m. They're located at 1425 Bishop St., Cambridge. SPORTS DAY -- As part of the Memorial Hospital Bowmanville 75th anniversary celebrations, there will be a number of special events on June 4 during the hospital's Sports Day. At nine a.m. there will be a bed race down Liberty St., from Queen St. to Memorial Park. There will also be a number of activities in the park, commencing at 10:30 a.m. Some of these will include a baseball game between doctors and nurses and administration, a dunk tank, and children's game booths. Plan to attend. GENERAL MEETING OF OHA -- Saturday, June 11, marks the Annual General Meeting of the Ontario Hockey Hockey Association. The event commences at one p.m. in the Royal York Hotel, Toronto. There will be an Awards Breakfast at 8 a.m. on Saturday, June 11. HALF PRICE DAY AT FITNESS CENTRE -- In recognition recognition of the annual Participaction Challenge, the Town of Newcastle Fitness Centre will be charging half price for all its activities on Wednesday, May 25. Don't forget that May 25th is the Participaction Challenge Challenge Day. Citizens are encouraged to take part in one fitness related activity for at least 15 minutes. This activity need not be a sporting event. For instance, it could be walking or gardening. The main objective is to participate and to phone in your activity to the Fitness Fitness Centre at 623-3392 or 987-5039. Phone lines will be open to 11 p.m. on May 25. Last year, Newcastle narrowly beat out Ajax for the title of fittest community community in the Durham Region. Your participation on May 25 will help Newcastle retain that title. Hampton Junior Public School sures knows how to win ball hockey games. The girls' ball hockey team placed first for the second year in a row in a tournament tournament held at the school on May 5. That win went hand in hand with the school's boys' team who also took home the first place trophy. The official opening of the bowling green takes place at 1:30 p.m. PROVINCIAL SPORTS GRANTS - The Ministry of Tourism and Recreation has announced that 32 provincial provincial sports organizations will receive operating grants totalling $1.1 million. The purpose of the funds is to help organizations offset early administrative and program costs. Some of the recipients includé: Softball Ontario ($40,000); Ontario Bail Hockey Association ($15,000); Canadian Figure Skating Association -- Ontario Ontario ($80,000) and the Ontario Ski Council ($200,000). S 166 KING STREET EAST jEP ■ BUS. 623-3396 * RES. 623-7405 Sales Representative By Bud Fanning The Markham Shamrocks Shamrocks spoiled the week-end opening games for the Newcastle Newcastle Lakers, defeating the Lakers 9 to 5 in Markham on Saturday afternoon and marching right into Newcastle Newcastle Village and trouncing, the Newcastle Lakers Sunday afternoon by the score of 16 to 1, in the Eastern Ontario Baseball Association Senior Division. • On Saturday afternoon, the Newcastle Lakers put up a good fight losing to the Markham Shamrocks 9 to 5, but the game was a lot closer then the score. Ken Vanha- verbeke started on the mound for the Lakers, pitching pitching four innings, relieved by Rob Terry, who in turn was .relieved by Field Manager John Robinson who finished out the game. Rob Seguim was on the mound for the Shamrocks, pitching five innings, with Lawrence Slaven taking over and finishing the game Bowling Lge. Holds Banquet The Rural Bowling League held their annual banquet on May 7th at the Tyrone Community Centre. The league championship was won for the second year in a row by Solina. Team members are Clarence Broy, Dale Broome, Lloyd Broome, Ron Broome, Don Taylor, Herb Tink, and Jim Fetchison. Haydon was second second with team members Ken Allin, Brian Annis, Don Dair, Rick King, Ron Metcalf, Rob Payne and Les Wright. Individual trophies were won by Don Taylor, high average, average, Ron Martin high triple, Dale Broome high single, single, Don Metcalf low average, average, Dwayne Glaspell most improved, Howard Cryder- man most sportsmanlike player. After a great meal and trophy presentations, the evening was highlighted by Keith Crago calling several square dances. l'or the Shamrocks. Seguim was outstanding for the Markham Club and was the winning pitcher. Losing Pitcher was Ken Vanhaver- beke. Sean Ferdinand, Mark Wallace, Keith Anderson and Steve Avery played well for the winners, while catcher catcher Dave Cyzechewski, Paul; Ranrenaud, Brad Kelly and John Robinson were the best of the losers. Sunday's game was a disaster, disaster, with the Shamrocks doing everything right and the Lakers doing everything wrong from fielding to hitting. hitting.
