I > \ Engagement Announced The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, May 25,1988 9 Letter to the Editor Dear Editor: On March 27, 1988, the Hon. Jake Epp stated to the Board of Directors of the Canadian Canadian Cancer Society at its 50th Anniversary Dinner that he had spoken to his Cabinet colleagues that week and received the commitment commitment that Bill C-51 (The Tobacco Tobacco Products Control Act) would be passed by the House of Commons before the summer recess. . Also, on March 15,1988, the Hon. Doug Lewis was uoted in the Toronto Star at Bill C-51 was on of the $ "Government's top initiatives" initiatives" for passage before June 30th. The time is running out. The Government is only a few days away from the point where, logistically, it will be extremely difficult, if not impossible, to obtain approval approval of the House Senate and Royal Assent before the House prorogues and the Bill dies. The Federal Government by its own statements has acknowledged acknowledged that tens, and probably hundreds of thou sands, of preventable deaths hang in the balance unless a significant intervention in the tobacco epidemic takes place. Bill C-51 is the Government's Government's promised' response. response. We are simply insisting, insisting, for an entire generation of kids, that the Government act with integrity and;kecp its promise. Yours truly, Ron Potter President Ontario Division Division Canadian Cancer Society- Society- Mr. and Mrs.. Happy Birthday, Keith. by Marla Lee Benny the cat was sent to the veterinary clinic because his owner could not keep him anymore. We were asked to try to find him a new home. Benny is a large, dark, grey and white cat. We are not sure how old he is. His ears have a few pieces missing, missing, and his face looks a little bruised, suggesting he may have had a lew battles in his day. As time passed Benny, slowly slipped into our hearts, ana it was getting . harder to find him a home: -^Eventually he was sent to a home on a farm, So off went Benny to his new master. But it was not long until we received a telephone call to say Benny wouldn't eat and that he was being a naughty cat. so back to the clinic came Benny. He strutted around the clinic with his head held high and tail straight up, with a look of joy on nis face as if he was saying, "Hi gang, I'm, ■ back." • Benny is far from perfect. He loves to boss all the visiting visiting animals and always has to oe where he shouldn't be; lying on the doctor's desk amongst the papers and sleeping in the cupboard where the x-rays are stored. His favorite place is high up on a sheTF in the treatment room, where he can watch everything that goes on. We also began to notice that Benny was getting fat. It was no wonder. The crafty cat would put on his "I'm, starving" look and make hungry mewing sounds until, one ofusfedhim. So rules had to be made. Sharon, our animal health , technician, was put in. charge of his diet, much to his annoÿarice. : Meanwhile, we found : Benny another "permanent" home. About 10 miles from j :-i the clinic ,wps à large dàiry ? farm. The owner thought : Benny would fit right into his home, so once again we said good-bye to him and hoped he woûld like his new family. Several weeks wentf'by when I came into work one morning, and who was eating eating breakfast but "Benny". "Who brought Benny home?" I said. Diane responded, "I don't know, he was here when I opened up the clinic this morning." We phoned the dairy farm and asked who had brought Benny back. The farmer assured us that no one had, but that Benny had been missing for a few days. So it appears Benny knew exactly where he really wanted to live, and that courageous courageous cat walked 10 miles through all kinds of weather, across highways, and probably probably had all kinds of adventures adventures on the way, to come home to his clinic and to all his friends. Benny couldn't have told us any plainer, could he, that this is where he wanted to be. So Benny is now our Official Official Clinic Cat. He still hides in all sorts of places, trys very hard to get anyone to feea him, and sometimes he does get a treat, but we . don't tell anyone; x "' 'h* W, Benny now has made friends with another cat at the clinic. It's another cat looking for a home. Ilis name is Nicholas, but Nicholas Nicholas is another story altogether. altogether.
