Mike Sr. is the father, he plays banjo, guitar, drums and saxophone and also sings lead and harmony vocals. vocals. Mike taught his children children to play their instruments. instruments. When the band was. in Newcastle at-this time, Mike had been in the hospital for a while, but now is reported reported doing well. Mother Pat and daughter Trish make their tunes alive as they both do lead and harmony harmony vocals, Eighteen-year old Trish masters the mandolin, mandolin, guitar and drums. Since the age of eight, the mandolin has been her main' instrument. (These two could be Canada's answer to "The Judds" down in Nashville). Nashville). To watch and listen to the three sons is a treat. Mike Jr. plays lead guitar, and also sings harmony and lead. Now fifteen, Mike has been playing guitar for nine years. Middle bother Tom (blue suede shoes.) McGrath plays a mean bass guitar. He also handles the bass fiddle and rhythm guitar along with singing- too. Tommy was at the bass when he was just four years of age. Dan is ten. He is the 1987 Junior Canadian Fiddle Champion. You can imagine how good this guy is. Danny has been playing the fiddle since he, was four, and also is the! g roup's main drummer. He; anales the backup fiddle as : well as many lead tunes. A pretty special family. The McGrath Family band has appeared on the Tommy Hunter Show, at the Roy Thompon Hall, Cullen's Country Barns and more, including including Bluegrass Festivals across Ontario. They will be back the weekend of June 24th at the Newcastle Inn (sometimes known affectionately as "The Hole in the Wall".) just east of Newcastle Village. We're hoping to take our children - they'd get a kick out of the McGraths. Best wishes in the world are extended out to the McGrath Family Band. It is great to see and support refreshing refreshing Canadiari talent on the move. My daughter turned seven seven tms past weekend. Sometimes Sometimes it seems as though she is seven going on twenty. If you have a little girl, I'll bet you know what I mean. I got a chuckle out of all the seven girls at our little celebration. They were all quite alike. Giggle, talk, talk, eat and eat more. Even the staff at the restaurant restaurant seemed to enjoy these busylittle çinderellas! Lions Chile Cook-Off Sunny skies and very clear warm weather brought good attendance to the 2nd annual chili cook off, held in Orono at the fair grounds. Saturday morning got off to a fine start with a delicious pancake and sausage breakfast. breakfast. This was sponsored by local downtown business men, and around 300 were served. The Newcastle Lions Club sponsored the cook-off and a fine musical menu for entertainment entertainment and dancing. Lots of fun from the "Dunk Tank", and other games etc., A fine job of looking after the gate was looked after by Hampton Sea Scouts and 1st Hampton Venturers. A very well co-ordinated mixture of games, booths, by various local local groups, and the Dunk Tank was looked after by United Way. The dance Saturday Saturday night was well attended. attended. On Saturday the Texas style chili contest was won by a team from St. Angelo,Texas. Angelo,Texas. Many factors decided decided on the prize winning chili, such as consistency, taste, texture, aroma ana spices used. Out of a class of 35 entries, elimination brings class down to 8 or 10 entries and new judges are now brought in to select final winners! winners! Apparently, chili judging judging is considered very serious serious business, and absolutely no facial expression allowed, (no matter now hot!) Certainly one of the youngest visitors was a young fellow, 9 years of age, C. W. Munroe, Dallas, Texas, and he told us he really loved coming to Ontario, and this was his 5th hip here. Our American visitors were heard to give many complimentary remarks on the facilities here in Orono for an event of this kind. Orono Art show. Another exciting event for Orono, when on Saturday morning, many artists from far and near, descended on Orono's main street. The displays displays were very varied and a fine appreciative audience strolled up and down our fine streets. Several merchants merchants had- outdoor tables and chairs to .give the "outside "outside cafe" look. Just to name a few of the eye-catching displays - Diane E. Brockvogel with a very attractive feature of wood-burning. The picture is burned and then brushed with stains and added paint for texture and depth. An éye-catching picture of "loonfe" drew much attention, attention, also a pencil crayon sketch entitled "Good Morning". Morning". Good water colors by Wayne Deremo, and John Clinenhage. "Dignity, Modesty and Impudence", a very cute title for picture of 3 little dogs, also a different style "River Sentinels" of trees, both by Eileen Racham, Pickering. Of course one of the real show stoppers was the "Har- monius Convergence", by Peter Boots. The iron sculpture of "large pig" on Town hall step was certainly a very different different type of artistic endeavour! endeavour! Don Staples, one of our own local artists, brought his specialty of water colors, in very delicate tones, with titles, "Couchiching", "Morning "Morning Mist" etc. Perish the thought, but artist Elsa-Sheridan excels with winter scenes, and just looking at her "Wolf River" and "Coldwater", made us think cool! For this flower lover, we sure admired Sylvia Sylvia Valentine's excellent "Pansies". Merlin Slute, Bowmanville, Bowmanville, brought an interesting dimension in art, with still life, of "Out of The Past". Many comments by passing Sr. Citizens relating to by gone days. The picture was of an old horse collar and whipple trees, and of course not many to be seen now adays! Pontypool station brought back memories to this writer, and another picture picture of Bowmanville C.P.R. Station could well become a collector's item! Merlin's daughter Carol is into "Paper "Paper Tole" and this drew much attention, espescially "The Old Violin" Orono United Church News Very pretty vases of carnations carnations adorned the chancel of Orono United Church, on Sunday morning, placed in loving memory of Lome Bowins, and placed by his wife Jennie. The service opened with uest soloist Mr. Ashton cMaster, formerly of Mill- brook, and now Oshawa, rendering several enjoyable numbers. Ashton is presently choir director and organist at Harmony United Church. Leading the service were Rosalyn Allin, Cheryl Reid, Cheri Davies and Gillian- Stubbs. These young ladies had recently attended the "Women Alive" conferences, and each brought their interpretations interpretations of the exciting event. Dorothy Barnett brought the children's story and again our soloist rendered the beautiful solo "No One Ever Cared for me Like Je sus.
