Bowmanville. Environment Week Stresses Importance of Conservation Canada will soon have the chance to prove that it is indeed one of the most environmentally environmentally conscious nations nations in the world. During Environment Week, being- celebrated from May 30 to: June 5, the proof is in the do-' ing, as Canadians from coast' to coast are asked to become even more involved in protecting protecting the environment. Today, the need for this protection is critical. It is estimated estimated that deforestation caused by logging, farming, ranching and mining will eradicate one million species of flora and fauna by the end of the 20th century. Canada's Canada's Dr. David Suzuki has predicted that, based on the' rapid rate of habitat destruction destruction and species extinction- throughout, the world, all' wilderness will likely vanish within the next 30 years. According to the World Commission on Environment Environment and Development, chaired by Prime Minister Brundtland of Norway, this destruction can be halted by ensuring that economic and social goals are not achieved at the expense of the envi-' . ronment. Canada is already heeding heeding this call to action. The re-; cent National Task Force on Environment and Economy has urged that leaders from government, business and research sectors, a well as experts in economics and environmental environmental issues, take the lead to resolve issues of concern. concern. One of their key objectives objectives will be to promote sustainable sustainable development - development that does not diminish the natural resources resources upon which future generations generations will depend. In the words of federal Environment Environment Minister Tom McMillan McMillan "What is required, in particular, particular, is a change in the way people think - the most challenging change of all. Albert Albert Einstein one observed, in a different context, that 'the splitting of the atom changed everything except our mode of thinking' - The challenge of Brundtland and of Canada's Task Force is to change that mode." During Environment Week, Canadians will be able to participate in a series of special events and activities, designed to show how they can promote sustainable development development in their communities communities and homes. Together, these events illustrate all the practical things we can do to integrate economy and the environment. The message of Environment Environment Week is that everyone - government, business, labour, labour, organizations and individuals individuals - can contribute to environmental protection. Under the theme "Our Common Common Future", Environment Week 1988 will bring this message home to all Canadians, Canadians, and prove'to the world that Canadacares. Take part in,Environment Week and shovy you care. It's up to all of us! ' For more information, please contact: Enquiries Centre Environment Canada Tel: (819) 997-2800.
