Ruthard The Cowan Pontiac Junior Junior All Star soccer team opened their 1988 season with a hard fought 3-2 win over their "Malvern" oppo-. nents from Scarborough. ■ The Bowmanville squad wasted no time getting on the scoreboard by taking advantage advantage of the disorganized start by the Malvern team. After several good scoring chances during the opening minutes, Derek Volling finally finally opened the scoring with a well placed shot into the top left corner, following a rebound rebound from a hard drive by Scott Hanthorn. Soccer Report by Jim Potter With the 1988 season of the Darlington Soccer League having completed its first month of the schedule, it appears that the defending League Champions from Tyrone, are beginning to separate themselves from the rest of the league. In fact from the five-games that Tyrone Tyrone have played, they have only lost one point, that coming coming from a tie with Flying Dutchmen on Saturday, night. Second place Hampton have six points, from five games ana seem to be the only club that could give the Tyrone lads a run up to this point of the season. Currently tied in third place, are three clubs Courtice, Courtice, Solina and Flying Dutchmen at four points each, while Zion follows with three points, one ahead of Orono at two points and Salem, Salem, at one point from three games. With a 1-0 lead early in the game, the home team settled down to some nice passing play, which produced produced several more good scoring chances and left their opponents struggling in their defensive zone. Under this constant pressure it was only a matter of time before Bowmanville enlarged their leàd to 2-0 in the 21st minute thanks to a hard drive by Brad Rickard from well outside outside the penalty area, which left the otherwise strong Malvern keeper watching helplessly. The Scarborough boys finally got their first good scoring chance of the game in the 39th minute, but their striker, under pressure by Mike Peel and George Bryant, missed by only inches. inches. However, this play just before halftime seemed to give the Malvern team the lift they needed to raise their game. From the opening whistle of the second half, it became very obvious that Malvern was not about to give up without a fight. Their persistent persistent and hard work, combined combined with a now rather laid back style of play and several several defensive lapses by thei Bowmanville side, allowed them to narrow, the score to 2-1 in the 55th minute and eventually tie it 15 minutes later. However, with what seemed to be a sure victory fast slipping away, the Cowan Cowan Pontiacs showed some great determination of their own and started to turn the game around again with the help of some tireless work by their midfielders Kevin Mills, Mike Ruthard. Carmine Carmine Cupelli and Brad Rickard. Rickard. This, combined with some great rushes by Ken Davies and George Bryant on defence, resulted in the well deserved winning goal in the 76th minute. Again it was Derek, who, after a well executed pass bv Ken, calmly calmly placed the ball past the on- rushing Malvern goalie just inside the goalpost. Overall, this was-a very entertaining game with the better te'am eventually taking taking the points. Good luck in your next game against Richmond Hill.
