I I 6 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanvillc, June 15, 1988 Section Two Happy First Birthday Central School Students Participate in Reading Program / Guides Receive All Round Cords Four members of 1st Bowmanville Girl Guides were honored on June 6th at Memorial Park Clubhouse when they were presented with their All Round Cords, the highest awardfor Guides. They are 1-r Sherry Neimann, Laresa Traill, Amy Trimble and Tanya Lloyd. These students from Bowmanville's Central Public Public School were all successful participants in the Partners in Excellence program offered through World Book Childcraft. The objective of the program is to encourage children to read and the prizes offered offered consisted of encyclopedias and other related reference books which are donated to the school. Through the Partners in Excellence Program, World Book donates $1 towards purchasing resource materials for every $2 raised by the students. Thanks to the efforts of the participating students and sponsors, the school earned three sets of World Book encyclopedias and a set of Childcraft books as well as other reference works such as dictionaries and atlases. Certificates were presented to approximately approximately 90 students this month. Most of them are shown above following a recent assembly. Meets Monthly meeting of Solina Solina W.I. was held on June 8th with President Barbara Kap- tyen in the chair/ Barb welcomed welcomed our visitors from the Hampton W.I. and also the Junior W.I. It was decided to purchase purchase a wedding gift for our adopted daughter in Hong Kong, Carol-Lai Ching. This is to be looked after by Faye Vice. A summer outing to the theatre in Peterborough is scheduled for July. With Marion Broome in charge, the east group took over the rest of the meeting. Alma Langmaid introduced introduced our guest for the evening, calling on Donna Sutherland. Donna is a * member of the Bowmanville Horticulture Society. She showed us how to put a bottle garden together as well as doing arrangements from wild flowers and weeds. This was most en- lightning and gave us ideas for our own arranging:. Work! Work! by Heather Watson That's all tney have been doing in Mrs. Bradley's grade three class. In math they have been working jon geometry. The students nave also been practising multiplication multiplication and division tables. They find problem solving difficult too. In reading the students have individualized reading books for daily reading. In environmental studies they just recently finished finished a wild flower unit and just started an emblem unit in which they name the emblem emblem of the provinces. In gym they have been going outside to the ball diamond to play three-pitch. Another fun activity is art. Lately they have been drawing famous famous cartoon characters. In music they have been singing singing favorite songs like "MorningTown Ride". Next week Mrs. Bradley's class is going to walk to St. Ste-' phems School to see a play production. In spelling the students are doing word list sentences. There are 29 students students in Mrs.Bradley's class. There are 10 boys and 19 girls. Their favorite thing in the whole class is the computer. computer. They write stories in rough and then they print a ood copy on the computer, lie class has had a fun year and everyone is sorry to see Mrs. Bradley leave. Primary Young Authors by Chantal Axclson. May 31,1988 the Primary Young Authors Club had a special sharing meeting where they could invite their parents to the Waverley library library to share books that the students have written. They invited their teachers and our principal Mr. Reid. At the meeting they shared the books they nad written. Mrs. VanSeggelen who organizes the Young Authors thought they did a good job, and she enjoyed working with them. Each member got a certificate. certificate. The meeting was held from 3:45 - 4:30. Some book topics the children wrote about were Dinosaurs, Adventure, Adventure, Choose Your Own Adventure, Humour, Pop- Ups and Flap books. Math For Living by Kelly Browne Mr. Thompson's grade five students have been working on a unit in Mathematics Mathematics called "Mathe for Living". Living". They are doing it to practise basic math skills such as addition, subraction, multiplication, and division with decimals and money, using calculators. Mr. Thompson is trying to make the students aware of bud gets, job qualifications and expectations and everyday living such as the cost of food, clothing, entertainment and some knowledge of household expenses such as mortgages, life insurance, car payments and sales tax. The students work as partners partners to earn an income and budget it to provide for daily, weekly and monthly needs. This unit seems very informative, informative, and is preparing the students for the coming years.
