The Bowmanville Fire Station had to cope with three lightning-induced blazes blazes all within about 15 minutes minutes of each other around 4:00 a.m. All three fires were in the same general area and all three were brought under control quickly. Two of the fires caused damage to a house and a barn while the third was a tree fire near a house in Tyrone. Tyrone. Luckily, fire fighters had the tree fire under control control before any damage was done to nearby buildings. "Damages caused by the house fire (in the Enniskillen area) are estimated at $30,000," reports the Town of Newcastle Fire Chief s Office. Office. "The damages to the barn (near Haydon) are approximately approximately $45,000." Wednesday's storm wasn't all bad, though. The three inches of rain that we received with all of the thunder thunder and lightning were sorely sorely needed oy our area farmers. farmers. "The rain came just at the right time," says Andrea Me- resz of The Ontario Ministnr of Agriculture and Food. If the rain had come much later, later, the dry spell could have caused permanent damage to crops. "In fact, it's surprising that the crops weren't already already hurting worse than they were...it was pretty dry out there," she reports. The much-needed rain of June 22 will be sufficient to allow local farmers, (not to mention local gardeners), to stop irrigation for quite a while. started off as a bit of a bummer. bummer.
