With the. help of the local service clubs, the Big Brothers Association Association of Newcastle was founded in March of that year. During the past 12 years there has been considerable growth in the organization with 20 matches at present. Due to this growth and the realization that there was a definite need for the service in the community, Big Brothers of Newcastle became became affiliated in October 1986 with the Big Brothers of Canada. This affiliation brought changes to the organization organization as there are certain certain requirements set out by Big Brothers of Canada which must be followed. Every three years Big Brothers Brothers of Canada visit the 174 agencies within Canada and carry out an evaluation of each Agency. This evaluation evaluation is designed to keep the service standards high. The Big Brothers Association Association of Newcastle serves the area of the Town of Newcastle. Newcastle. There are ten Little Brothers waiting to develop a friendship with a Big Brother volunteer. The Agency asks Big Brother volunteers to give a full year commitment and spend three to four hours a week with their Little Brother. Only this time commitment can give necessary opportunity opportunity for a friendship to grow ana the confidence to a Tittle boy that this person is not going to drop out of his life. Big Brother volunteers are very special people who truly give of themselves. They are patient, mature, and of course, they enjoy children. Their commitment is not for a few hours, weeks, or months, but usually for a lifetime. Once a friendship develops it is forever. There are five committees made up of Board members, plus additional members from the community who do not sit on the Board. These committees work with the two staff members - executive executive director/caseworker and secretary - to organize activities activities for both Big and Little Brothers, recruit Big and Little Brothers and Board members, fund raise and give direction concerning matches. As a member of the United United Way of Oshawa-Whitby- Newcastle since January 1988, we receive funding for our staff. Additional funds are raised through our "Bowl for Millions Campaign" Campaign" held during February and an Annual Sports Swap held in September. The 1988 Bowl for Millions was very successful and the Agency appreciates the large number number of people in the community community who participated in this event. During the past year Big Brothers of Newcastle has had a 70% growth and presently presently has 20 matches. The Town of Newcastle is growing growing in population and eventually eventually the number of Little Brothers with a need for a companion will grow too. The Agency wants to meet that growth by having Big Brother volunteers available. available.
