Buildall Started in Courtice The present-day Henry Buildall and Henry Do-It Centres began as a small wordworking shop employing employing three people in the early 1930's.. Initially the company was called Oshawa Wood Products Products Ltd. (that still remains as the corporate name) and manufactured moldings, oak staircases, window frames, incubators and egg crates. Much has changed over the years. The one woodworking woodworking shop has expanded to three local retail outlets; one in Courtice, one at the border of Oshawa and Whitby Whitby and another in Ajax. Product lines have changed and expanded immensely immensely since the early days. Now the popular company offers the widest selection of floor covering, home decorating decorating supplies, hardware, electrical equipment, and plumbing and heating wares. J. Cecil Found, a longtime resident of Courtice and Ebenezer Ebenezer area started the com- ' pany in 1931 under the Oshawa Wood Products name. Bill Henry, the head of the present-day business, began his home improvement improvement career in 1939. Mr. Found was his father-in-law and together they worked towards towards the continued growth and development of the company. A fire in 1952 destroyed the Courtice Henry Buildall Centre. However, the store kept running from an Oshawa factory until the new lumber and supply showcase was officially, opened in 1960. Since that time the Whitby and Turn to Page 35 Drug Store Grew With Town Alex McGregor opened the McGregor IDA Drug Store on April 3, 1933, purchasing purchasing the business from R.M. Mitchell. Alex McGregor began his apprenticeship in pharmacy at the Jury and Lovell Drug Store on Kang St. in the days when druggists learned their trade through an apprenticeship apprenticeship before studying pharmacy pharmacy at university. After graduating from the University University of Toronto, he worked in Toronto and then returned to Jury and Lovell where he served as assistant manager before taking over R.M. Mitchell and Co. Old records indicate that the first day of business, the store took in $9.81. Hours of operation were from eight a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on weekdays and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Wed nesday afternoon, the shop was closed. The Saturday evening hours date back to the days when farmers came to town Saturday night for their traditional traditional shopping excursion. The practice of pharmacy at that time included the actual actual mixing of many medicines medicines and liquids since they were not pre-manufactured and pre-packaged to the extent extent that they are today. In addition, a number of the powders, ointments and other other medicines dispensed by the druggist were from présentions présentions of local veterinarians veterinarians for farmers' livestock. One of the major changes occuring during Mr. McGregor's McGregor's ownership of the store was the redecorating and renovation of the premises in 1962. Some of the old cases originally contained in the store have found their way into the Bowmanville Museum Museum collection. Mark Borutskie and Arthur Arthur Evans purchased McGregor Drugs in 1973 after after the death of Mr. McGregor McGregor in 1972. Six years later, the partners partners decided to expand their business, purchasing the neighbouring dress shop and tearing down a wall. A further further expansion took place in the fall of '85, giving the' store a full 4,000 square feet. Changes which have hit the pharmacy profession in recent years include the extensive extensive use of computers to store information on each patient and assist the pharmacist pharmacist in other aspects of the profession. But some things about the business haven't changed over the years. Then, as now, McGregor Drugs remains a community pharmacy.
