4 The Canadian Statesman. Bowmanville. July 6,1988 Section Two Handling It! value in any of it. No, definitely definitely not interested. Despite my many years of conning kids into eating when they don't want to, and what they don't want, this guy won t have any part of it. So, naturally, naturally, rather than waste even questionable food, I have to eat the cereal myself. Next, we try some of that wonderful mix-you know, nuts, sesame and sunflower seeds, bits of this and that, tasty stuff. Success! He aping aping thermostats, disturbing parently likes it. He's eaten it household items of every before with relish, so I know Toddlers By Lloyd Scott We have a toddler in oui house. He's a wonderful child, very much in chargé of himself. himself. He takes little or no crap from anyone. He's fiercely detemined and independent, as only a 19 month old kid can be. Curious and mischievous, mischievous, he's not malicious or nasty. He's into and on top of virtually everything, adjust- sort into every nook and cranny, playing the piano and the radios, carefully putting putting all kinds of stuff into the garbage. He's tirelessly busy. One of the things he's busy doing is challenging everybody else and getting angry when others challenge challenge his right to do what he wants to do. We haven't kept score of wins and losses, but one thing's for sure: he wins often ana somehow has persuaded persuaded the rest of us that that's okay. This raises in my mind the question of power. As every parent knows so well, a toadler's power is out of all proportion to his or her size ana apparent knowledge of the world. The power of a toddler can make us parents cry in frustration, scream in anger, and laugh in helpless admiration as we're once again manipulated, taught something new ana important, important, aria shown just now narrowminded our rules and expectations really are. Recently, I was looking after our very own toddler and, for example, here's how the eating went. He must be really hungry by now, I, thought with my adult grasp of such difficult matters. It was past lunch time. Now, what would really turn him on. Toast and jam, right? He didn't want that. So, of course, rather than waste good food, I ate it. Toast without jam perhaps. No, he didn't like that either, so I ate that too. He loves cereal, cereal, so I fixed a small bowl of his favorites, rice krispies and cheerios, even thougn in my opinion there's no food I'rri on the right track. And of course I love the stuff too, so naturally I'm eating right along with him, grining like a fool as I poke another sunflower sunflower seed into his mouth. I've forgotten, that some foods he enjoys chewing but doesn't like swallowing. He reaches for my hand and quite neatly spits into it the considerable mouthful of mix that I thought I'd successfully successfully persuaded him to eat. And so it goes. Grapefruit, clementine, a drink of milk or water, a cracker, a cookie. Not interested. Nothing personal, personal, just not interested. This story has sequels in-, volving breast-feeding and other dynamics of family life which I won't go into. Later, my wife explains. Mothers of toddlers frequently get bored, irritated and tired, for lots of reasons. But they also tend to eat frequently, partly out of boredom, irritation and tiredness. Also, just trying trying to induce a child to eat a little, a mother may end up eating a lot. After all, nobody wants to waste food. You see how all this kid stuff affects family life, and may even put the marriage in jeopardy? Mom begins to put on weight. Dad looks at her worriedly as she swells up, and looks a bit more haggard haggard and tired. The house is always a mess.. He comes home to find things between him and his wife are, well,, not the same as they have been. An uneasy feeling begins begins to insinuate itself into this marriage relationship. God only knows where that might lead. And all because of the power of the shortest, littlest, cutest person in the whole .family. The one who's supposed supposed to be the most powerless. powerless.
