Ruthard The Cowan Pontiac Junior Junior Soccer Team travelled to Scarborough on June 28th to face off with Malvern and was able to return home with another convincing victory. victory. A hard and bumpy playing playing surface, combined with the strong wind and blinding sun against them, hindered ball control somewhat, but the Cowan Pontiacs still managed to put together a number of nice plays during the first half. As in the previous previous encounter between these two teams, the Darlington club forced the pace from the first whistle to take advantage advantage of a disorganized start by the home team. With the match just nine minutes old, Kevin Mills, who had another strong performance performance for the evening, put the visitors up 1:0 with a 20 yard curveball just under the crossbar, following a one touch set up by Ken Davies and Brad Rickard. With this early confidence builder the Darlington attackers kept Ê ushing forward, led by lerek Volling and Steven Mills, while the midfield of Carmine Cupelli, Brad Rickard, Rickard, Kevin Mills and Mike Ruthard caused numerous turnovers with their close marking and provided a strong second line offensive thrust, thanks to some nice piercing passes and long distance distance shooting. Just as it seemed the visitors would have to contend themselves with a, under the circumstances, circumstances, rather meagre one goal lead at halftime, Derek Volling struck in the 44th minute with a well placed shot into the far corner, finishing finishing off a quick paced set up by Steven and Kevin Right from the start of the second half, the Cowan Pontiac Pontiac defence of Jonathan Goad, Lance Haluka, George Bryant and Treffor Davies, supported by Ken Davies in the Sweeper role, made it very clear that they were not going to give the quick Malvern Malvern forwards any more room to maneuver than in the first 45 minutes and effectively effectively suffocated any attempts attempts on their part to come even close to scoring. Continued Continued hard work by all team members kept most of the play in the Malvern defensive defensive end and it was only a matter of time before this was going to be reflected on the scoreboard. Finally, in the 61st minute, Ken Davies used his heading skills to convert a corner kick, only to have the goal disallowed for "Trying Too Hnrd"(7). But in the 70th minute justice was done, when Ken put away a penalty shot after the Malvern Malvern keeper made the initial save. Overall, this was another well deserved win for a hard working team and the second second consecutive shutout for the goaltending duo of Adam Carter and Jamie Martin, who had a relatively quiet night, but came up with the saves when called upon. Congratulations to all for a total team effort nnd an exemplary exemplary sportsmanlike performance, performance, which limited you to one yellow card, versus throe for the homo team. Good luck in your next match against Richmond Hill.
