FLASHBACK -- 10 YEARS AGO -- Kevin Eves, Ron and Dan Strike, Scott Vandriel, Wayne Coombes and Derek Lobb will remember an incident that happened at the second hole of the Canadian Open's third round at Glen Abbey Golf Course on Saturday. BALL HOCKEY TOURNAMENT -- On Saturday, July 16, the boys' ball hockey season will come to a close with a tournament at the Darlington Sports Centre. This is the first year for the 10 to 14-year-olds and organizers expect that the present four teams will double double next year because the project has proved to be highly successful. Play started at the end of April. The first game of the tournament begins at eight a.m., with the championship presentations taking place around 12:30 p.m. MEMBERS' COUPLES TOURNAMENT -- This popular- alternate shot tournament took place June 10 at the Newcastle Golf Course with 35 couples participating. The low gross score went to Mike and Carol Johnson who shot an 84. Don and Eileen Easton had the low net score with a 61. The second low gross went to the team of Sheri Stere and Bob Stiles while Jack and Eleanor Glover had the second low net. June Taylor was the lady whose shot landed closest to the pin and Stan Neil- son had the closest shot to the pin among the men. Central School Takes Softball Championship MOSPORT 24 HOURS -- Canada's only 24-hour auto race, the Sports Car Club of America's Endurance Championship for showroom stock sports cars, is coming coming to Mosport next month. SLOW PITCH TOURNAMENT -- The James Publishing Publishing Co. men's team will be sponsoring a slow pitch tournament this weekend. The competition is on . Saturday and Sunday at Memorial Park Ball Diamonds ; and at Vincent Massey Public School. The following •; weekend (Friday, July 22 and Saturday:'July 23) there ' Will be a tournament sponsored by the Christian Mente League. Games will take place at Memorial Park and in Orono. HORSE TRIALS -- The Bowmanville Rotary Club will be sponsoring its annual Horse Trials once again this summer. The date is August 28. More information will, no doubt, be made available later. by Bud Fanning On July 9th at the Village Park in Newcastle Village on a very hot Saturday afternoon, afternoon, the Newcastle Lakers took on the Ajax Printers in an Eastern Ontario Baseball Association Senior League game with the heat getting to the Lakers as they were blasted by the Printers 18 to 7. Mike Gallant started on the mound for the Lakers and was relieved by John Robinson in the seventh and last inning. Losing pitcher was Mike Gallant and the winning pitcher Dave Shearer Shearer who was relieved by Peter Kwilly in the fifth inning. The game was quite close for awhile, but the Ajax Club had a couple of big innings which took the game out of the reach of the Lakers. Brad Kelly had a triple, double and single, while team mates Dan Annis, Don Newton, Mike Gallant, Dave Williams and Scott Veals played well for the Lakers. Standouts for the Ajax Printers were Dave Shearer, v ..Jim.,-Bush, Mikje Roach --aud Dave - Larkin. BrëttFdstèrandScçttVeaïs hit home runs for the Lakers. On Sunday afternoon, July 10th, the Newcastle Lakers visited their cross town rivals the Kendal Eagles Eagles in Jackson Park with the Eagles winning 14 to 5. The game was quite exciting up to the last of the eighth inning inning when the Eagles went on a rampage and scored six big runs to make the score 14 to 5. Up to that time Eagles led 8 to 5. Despite the intense heat the game was well played with John Robinson starting on the mound for the Eagles and being replaced replaced by Brad Bull in the seventh inning. Winning pitcher John Robinson, while Brett Poster started on the mound for the Lakers and was relieved by Ken Vanhaverbeke in the' last of the eighth inning. Losing pitcher was Brett Foster. Brad Kelly of the Lakors was a standout not only in the field but also at bat with two hits four times at bat and the one hit was a good double. double. The low gross score went to Warren Atherton (83) and Glen Murphy (86). Low net was won by Mike MacGregor. The golfers closest to the pin were Mike McDougall and Randy Nixon. GOLFER POET -- Some intrepid golfer/poet composed this parody which appeared recently in the bulletin of the Bowmanville Rotary Club. Niblicks were made for fools like me, who cannot cannot ever miss a tree. These girls from Central Public School ended the school year happily. They beat Ontario Street Public School two games straight, earning the title of Public School Soft Ball Champions.
