Recently. I had an en- . counter with the Art Selection Selection Committee for the Visual Visual Arts Cente of Newcastle in Bowmanville that raises questions of ethics and hu-- manity. On May 28,1988, 1 exhibited some -- and Outdoor Bowmanville Councillor Ann Cowman admired some work that had recently won awards at the Visual Arts Centre. She later asked me to submit a pottery platter "Horse Ring" that had won an Award of Distinction 1988, for display in the new Town Hall during its official opening, July 12 by Princess Margaret. I was thrilled. After working working over 20 years in the clay medium and struggling for a position for craft as art, recognition recognition of my work is very sweet. I was later informed by Denise Vanson, of the Visual Visual Arts Centre that the piece had been accepted. However, However, it was not to be. On June 24, Mr. Joseph Dalrymple, also acting for the Visual Arts Centre, informed informed me that he and other members of the Selection Committee, could not show my platter. They had deemed three others to be more "suitable." Privately, I have been told my offense lies in my not being a fulltime fulltime resident; however, I have owned property north of Kendal lor over nine years. I do pay property tax in this area and I am on the municipal voting register. Like many other Newcastle residents, I am forced to earn my living outside the area. During the week I live in Toronto Toronto near where I work ak a conservator of museum artifacts. artifacts. Residency is a moot point. To have a juried competition that awards honours but does not recognize recognize the work so honoured, renders the award meaningless. meaningless. To notify a hopeful that their work has been chosen for an occasion and reject it weeks later is unnecessarily cruel. To deem work "suitable" "suitable" based on the artist's location, location, not on merit recognized recognized by an unbiased jury is jingoism. Could it be that it is not the point of residency, or "suitability", but who I reside with that gives offense? My husband, Doug Moffatt, local local well-known former edu cator and politician, is currently currently seeking the federal Liberal party nomination for this area.
