Now, more than 200 workers are looking for jobs. In an effort to nlace the unemployed, the EM I union (local 222 of the Canadian Auto Workers) along with the provincial and federal governments have set up a relocation centre at 39 Ontario Ontario Street in Oshawa. The relocation centre has been operating since June 2nd with its staff that consists consists of four union members, (Donna Burke, Jane Hendriks, Hendriks, Jackie Gilkes, and Shirley Mapes), an advisor who was part of the Cadbury Cadbury relocation program (John O'Neill), ana two government government members (R.J. Morris and Donna Koeltz). "Ordinarily, a relocation centre is funded 60% by the company and 40% by the government," explains John O'Neill. However, since EMI went into receivership one week after its closure, this centre is 100% government funded. (Both federal and provincial governments are contributing.) Former EMI employees have received no severance pay and are now receiving dental and OHIP bills that were to have been covered by the company. "OHIP and Blue Cross haven't been paid by the company since January 1st," says Donna Burke; "employees "employees were* given no notice of the closure, no severance pay, and are now receiving unexpected bills that they just can't pay." EMI was owned by Plastic Plastic Group Technologies Inc. along with PSP in Whitby, Chromtech in Chatham, and CMP plastics in Peterborough. Peterborough. Former employees point out that in the past year, EMI had government loans totaling more than $4.5 million. Now the committee is wondering where that money went. "Everybody wants to keep that $41/2 million hush hush," says John O'Neill. The delay in opening a relocation centre was due to the belief that EMI might reopen. reopen. Now it is clear that its doors will remain closed. "We at the relocation centre centre are sending out 250 letters letters to companies in the Durham Durham Region," says Mr. O'Neill. PSP in Whitby is now advertising advertising for help. "Perhaps PSP could approach EMI people for jobs," says Donna ; Burke. "EMI people are experienced experienced and qualified." Jackie Gilkes suggests that former EMI employees go to the Employment Help Centre in Bond Towers in Oshawa to do their resumes then bring them into the EMI Relocation Centre. "We try to place employ ees with other companies oi everyone since many have Former EMI employees find job retraining courses disconnected phones due to should contact the centre at for them," she says.
