The 59-year-old Quebec native has pedalled to 84 countries world-wide since starting his voyage in 1951. A childhood bout with polio left Mr. Dube with poor co-ordination and limited speech. He says he started his trip to prove that a person with handicaps can do just about anything. During his trip he has worn out 12 bicycles travelling over 400,000 kilometres. (He notes that he has to change the sign on the side of the bicycle). While he has enjoyed the experience of the différent différent cultures around the world, his heart still belongs in Canada. Mr. Dube has no immediate plans to stop his trip and hopes to one day publish a book about his Orono Skating Club Events By Lynne Lemieux Registration is upcoming for the 1988-89 season at Orono Figure Skating Club. In all my months of writing this column I have never really been stuck for ideas. Until this week. You see, I can't decide whether I should comment comment on Wayne Gretzky's Gretzky's trade, the free trade deal, the blistering summer summer heat or the farmers market that the Bowmanville Bowmanville BIA wants to start. Should I chat about the upcoming municipal elections or the fact that it appears the new arena will enjoy completion before before the town hall? Can I talk about poor Kate and her apparent terminal illness? (Although her doctor is predicting a miracle recovery). Should I rage at the fact that poor Elvis Presley just can't seem to die (didn't you see him walking around Canadian Canadian Tire last week?). And what about the royal baby naming contest - that is earth shattering news. I could give my insight insight into having to prepare prepare for four weddings (guest at two and take part in two) in three months. Or I could confirm confirm the rumours of my imminent departure from Bowmanville. (Yes, B.C. stole my heart for good and I'm planning planning to move there later this year.) But none of those topics seem quite right. I mean who really wants to hear anything more about "The Great One?" The way people are carrying on you'd think he'd been killed rather than traded. And why shouldn't Mr. Gretzky Gretzky go wherever he wants to go? He doesn't just have himself to think about any more. A wife and child can certainly change a man's priorities. priorities. Despite what may be the "real",, story to thei trade of the century, I'm awfully tired about hearing hearing about the arrogant Peter Puck and the heartbroken heartbroken town that still has that over-sized mall. And what about free trade? Does anyone really really know what it is all about? Does anyone really really care? How many people people even know who the agreement is with? O.K., so that's going a little too far. I just fail to see what a public vote on the entire issue is going to do until there is some decent public public education on the entire entire situation. I'm not talking political education education (although the politicians politicians could sure use it) but some grass roots explanations explanations and truths about the argeement, rather than leadership bashing and paranoia. Maybe it is the summer summer heat that has brought on all the craziness about the agreement. It is surely surely safe to say that it has brought on some sort of craziness. I can't shake my feeling of slugginess from the moment my feet hit the floor until my head returns to the pillow. pillow. Despite my ever- rotating fan this has been a draining and exhausting exhausting summer. But, why complain? Is anyone anyone listening? _ That's the same question question that the Bowmanville Bowmanville BIA might be asking. asking. Their idea of a farmers market in the downtown area is one of the best I've heard since moving here. I'm not kidding. I love farmers markets. Their many sights, sounds ana smells bring back wonderful wonderful memories. I'm a bargain shopper from way back when and I love chatting with the farmers. From my days spent living with a farm family in Quebec and attending attending a weekly market, market, I nave developed a certain style to negotiating. negotiating. If you think it's tough making a deal in English, you should try French. However, if a sense of the unknown really grabs you then the municipal municipal election ring is where you belong. The only thing for sure about the election is that it will Birthday Girl Turns Tivo be held on November 14. From there it is anyone's guess. I finally got to write my first story on a candidate candidate last week. While it may be totally unprofessional unprofessional of me I think that the best person for the job of mayor is ... Ha, fooled ya! If I did that then Kate and I would surely be run out of town. If I do have any regrets regrets about leaving it is simply that I won't be here for all the hoopla of the council elections. What hoopla you may ask? Well, let me tell ya! I've invested a lot of my last year and a half into those people and I know that not one of them will willingly go down without without a fight. Our municipality municipality could very well have the makings of a real exciting election race. If I'm wrong, well, I'll be too far away to be blamed anyway. Another thing I'm going going to miss is the chance to lace up my skates for the opening of the new arena. (Notice how I haven't haven't even mentioned the town hall - maybe later). later). As anyone who drives by -the work site can tell, the whole building building is going to be quite impressive. «I think it will more than live up to its expectations and I wish the fundraising committee lots of luck. Once again, if I'm wrong and it turns out to be a disaster, then I'll be too far away ... I have been very good so far about my comments comments about the town hall. And I still think that the less said now about that structure the better. Kate has returned to car hospital. While I thought at first it was simply a reaction to that revolting yellow on the town hall it would appear that shelve, ally does have an internal problem. I now know what my parents parents went through when one of us kids was sick. I don't have any children (none that I'll admit publicly publicly to anyway) and Kate is my baby. Despite the fact that she must be fed, kept cleaned and receive receive mechanical attention attention on a regular basis, I love her dearly. In the coming weeks I must decide decide Kate's fate and it is really a tough decision. Does anyone want to adopt a well-loved baby? And speaking of babies: babies: When will that popular popular Royal Redhead and her Gorgeous Hubbie settle on a name for their child? The world eagerly awaits, amid wars, apartheid and President Reagan's long overdue departure, for Sarah and Andrew to name their baby girl. Judging from Saralvs reputation I doubt she is going to give in to the cries for some traditional label for the youngster. The woman nas a mind of her own and that baby surely will too. Even though the wait does seem a little unnecessary unnecessary it is rather nice speculating what the child will be called. Princess Carolyn. Now, isn't that special? On the other side of newborn life is the "I just can't seem to die" stoiy of Elvis Presley. I'm most definitely not an E.P. fan. I don't particularly enjoy his music and the thought of walking through Graceland turns me off. However, I wish the poor man could be laid to rest and that his family could be spared the continual reunions and candlelight services that happen every year. I think all the people who claim they nave seen Mr. Presley since his death should be forced to prove it or shut up about it. Speaking about shutting shutting up, it is almost time for me to finish this column. column. For someone who wasn't sure what to write about I don't think I've done too badly. You'll just have to wait and see about the weddings weddings and B.C. Hi everyone! I turned two on July 10, 1988. My proud Mom and Dad are Tina and Larry Watson.
