Displaying Pictures for Viewer Effect All of us have fond memories of good times, good friends, and special occasions. Unfortunately, memories dim with the years. Photographs are one way to help keep your memories bright. But photographs stored forgotten in a drawer won't be of much help. Pictures need to be seen to be appreciated, appreciated, and there have never been more ways to display photos than there are today. Gone arc the days of dull, brown frames. Traditional Traditional frames.have blossomed into an endless variety of shapes and materials. You can choose from wood, metal, plastic, and ceramic shaped in the traditional rectangle, oval, round or heartshaped. Also very popular arc frames in the collage style which allow you to display anywhere from half a dozen to 20 or so pictures within a single frame. Complimentary Frames Choose your frame to suit your home's colors and decor, but choose the shape to compliment your picture. picture. You'll find that many photos increase in impact when their subject is narrowed by a frame. That's because tight framing often eliminates distracting backgrounds and focuses attention on the main subject. subject. Your photofinisher can produce the same effect in an enlargement by a process called "cropping." Cropping Cropping simply means that a portion of the original photograph is left out when the picture is enlarged. Photos don't need to be enlarged to major works of art to be displayed in a home. If you're hesitant to have your pictures open to public scrutiny, pick a more private portion of your home for their display. There's no rule that says a bedroom or den can't be hung with as many pictures as you'd like. Even the wall of a kitchen can be a great display • area, although you'll want to choose an area that's not too close to the stove as protection from both heat and cooking spatters. Changeable Display Of course, frames and walls aren't the only way to display photographs. Mounting a piece of corkboard on a wall will provide a handy space for showing off ' pictures while allowing you to change the display quickly and easily. And albums have their place, too, for pictures that you'd like to save but don't want to display. , - -.■■■•> Try organizing albums by subject, such as having one containing pictures of family vacations and another of birthday parties. Albums also have the advantage of allowing you to record dates and other information next to the picture. That's especially helpful with pictures of children, particularly shots taken during the first two years of life when youngsters youngsters change so rapidly. When organizing your photos, be sure to" hold onto your negatives. It's possible to make a copy from a print, but a copy made from a negative is superior and less expensive. Don't neglect or forget your photographs -- they're as precious as your memories.
