A Town of Newcastle resident resident was among the 16 civilians civilians who were honored this month at the Durham Regional Police Awards Banquet held in Whitby. The civilians were recognized recognized for assisting the police -in actions which could best ,be described as "above and -beyond the call of duty". The happy event took place in Orono United Church main hall and the ladies of unit #1 served a delicious afternoon afternoon tea. In the evening a delicious turkey dinner was held in the hall for family, friends and neighbors, served by ladies ladies of unit #4. The couple's son David acted as M.C. for the evening and thanked everyone for coming to this happy event. Reverend Gerry Gerry Hoffsteter, Guelph, friend of family, gave the blessing at dinner, and gave remarks following canner. Some of their former neighbors gave speeches, Art Rowan, Howard Howard Malcolm to name' some, and the bride and groom gave humorous stories stories on how they met, to the delight of all present. The couple were married September 17,1938 in "Old Dagenham" Church, Essex, England. They came to Canada Canada in 1956. The dinner menu was tasty and delicious delicious and consisted of fried chicken, escalloped potatoes, vegs, salads, rolls, fruit salads salads and a beautiful birthday cake. Happy birthday was sung to those celebrating September birthdays, with Gladys Brown at the piano. New Season For Seniors Bowmanville Senior Citizens Citizens opened their Fall season season with a delicious Pot Luck supper, convened by Mrs. Welsh at the Lions Centre, September 13th. Mrs. V. Stuart Roy Edward Candler A lifelong resident of Bowmanville, widely known, and a friend to many, died at his residence in Bowmanville, onTuesday, August 30,1988, in his 80th year. Born and educated in Bowmanville, he was the son of the late Roy and Leah (Lander) Candler, and was married November 20,1937, to the late Bernice Bagnell. Employed as a miller at Vanstone Flour and Feed Mill for over 40 years, retiring retiring 14 years ago, he had resided resided on King Street East, Bowmanville for 47 years. A member of Jerusalem Lodge, A F and A M for over 50 years, he was also a mem ber of Trinity United Church, Bowmanville. In his younger years he was interested interested in sports and ployed on many Bowmanville teams, especially hockey. Left to mourn his passing are his daughter Sandra, son-in-law Lloyd Stainton, grandaughter Suzanne, grandson Paul, and a brother brother Russell of London. He was also predeceased by two brothers Stanley and Norman. Norman. The Reverend E.
