Paul PabUe, PATRIE Builders & Renovators Ltd 623-9307 This fall, get your car revved up far a trouble-free winter Take great care of your car by practicing preventive medicine Srclinn Two The (Nmiulian Statesman. Bmvnianvillo. September 21. 1988 7 Every winter, countless motorists find themselves--and their cars--unprepared for the first really cold weather or the first snowfall. It's easy to procrastinate. You tell yourself that mayhc next weekend, or the weekend weekend after that, you'll do the necessary work, or lake the car to a mechanic. Then, suddenly, winter is upon you. and it's so cold that you dread going outside to work on your car. And. all the local mechanics arc too busy to take care of your car. because everyone else procrastinated, too. This year, don't put it off. Getting your ear ready for winter now will save you time, and can even prevent your car from being damaged by conditions for which it's not prepared. Getting your car ready for winter doesn't just mean putting on snow tires, though that's certainly an important part of it. This is a good lime to take your car to a mechanic for a complete diagnostic checkup, because anything that's not quite right now is sure to cause you problems problems in adverse weather conditions. This is a good pre-winter investment, especially especially if you're not an expert do-it-your- seller. A diagnostic checkup is not the same thing ns a traditional tunc-up. While the tune-up may have been considered a panacea panacea in the past, today's ears require accurate accurate diagnosis. Instead of routinely replacing things like points, plugs and condenser, the technician must make a thorough diagnosis diagnosis of what's causing hard starling, poor performance, reduced fuel economy or increased emissions. He or she can no longer replace some parts and make a few simple adjustments to gel the engine running like new. If you're experiencing engine problems. problems. you may or may not need servicing of one of the subsystems. The ignition system, the fuel system and the emission control systems must work in close harmony harmony with each other. That's where accurate accurate diagnosis comes in. Hut. apart from this fairly complicated analysis, you can probably do most of the other necessary work yourself. Here's a checklist, from Car Care Council, of things you should do to get your car ready for winter. I ) CiHilintt System: Flush the system out with a good chemical cleaner and install install fresh antifrcc/c. Make sure to dilute the antifreeze to the proportion indicated oil the container, as pure antifreeze will not work well. Also check connections, bells, hoses, pressure cap and thermostat. 2) Buttery wul Elect rirai System: Cold weather is hard on batteries, so be sure connections arc clean and tight. Corroded Corroded or loose connections can give the symptoms of a weak or dead battery. 3) Oil and Filter: Dirty oil van give you trouble in the winter. Now's the time to change it. Change the oil filter, too. Your car may have several other filters.' including including the fuel, air and transmission filters. filters. that may need changing at this time. 4) Tires: For every 10° of temperature drop, your tire pressure decreases by one pound. If you haven't checked your tires since last summer, they're likely to lie several pounds undcrinllated. 5) Body and Taint: He sure to give the ear a gmid protective coaling of wax lic- fore the weather turns nasty. This is critical critical in areas where salt is used for snow removal, because sail is extremely corrosive. corrosive. And. if you prepare your ear for winter's winter's harsh conditions, you may lie able to keep it out of the shop entirely. There's a lot to lie said for getting the ear care chores out of the way before severe weather arrives. Just because it's winter, don't forget your car's air conditioner: It can help you survive the cold As you're rolling along the highway this winter, and your ear's windows fog up. don't just turn on the defroster-- clear your windows with a blast from your ear's air conditioner as well, says Swedish automaker Saab. In winter, your ear's windows sometimes sometimes fog because of moisture emitted from your damp clothing and other sources. It is this moisture that condenses ,on your windows in the same way that moisture condenses on it van of cold soda pop. I low air conditioner works In a ear's air conditioning system, the evaporator takes this moist warm air from the interior compartment and simultaneously simultaneously dries it as it cools. Inside the evaporator, low pressure refrigerant refrigerant gas. called freon, evaporates and turns to vapor, absorbing heat in the same way that your hand will get cold from holding a piece of ice -- your hand is giving up that heal which is absorbed by the ice. Your hand then feels colder. As the car's warm interior air passes Choosing the right gasoline Winter is coming and you're darn sure your car will lie ready. There's a snow shovel in the trunk, anti-freeze under the hood and tires with plenty of traction for slippery conditions. Hut what happens when that unexpected unexpected winter blessing--the balmy day -- comes along? Your ear stumbles, stalls and maybe leaves you stranded on the road. Don't be so quick to blame your car-- whether it has 16.000 or 60,000 miles on it. What you pump into that ear. the gasoline, gasoline, has a lot to do with how well it starts, runs and sounds, advises the Motor Motor Vehicle Manufacturers Association (MVMA). Remember, it's not the brand of gasoline gasoline but the ingredients in it that determine determine what is best for your vehicle. Gasoline is a complex mixture of various various hydrocarbons. "Winter" gas is lighter and more volatile--the better to perform in cold weather, according to Fred W. Uowditch, MVMA Vice President President for Technical Affairs.' In warm weather, gas should he heavier and less volatile to fuel motor vehicles vehicles more accurately. As for your ear's poor performance on that summer-like winter day. it could Ik due to a tank holding high-volatility "winter** gasoline--too light to perform elfeelivcly during a sudden hot spell.; If gas is too volatile, or too light, pockets of vapor can form, causing the ear to.stall. Petroleum refiners are required to adjust adjust the mixture of their gasoline'to match the climate and season changeability changeability of the areas they supply. Bowditeli points out. Another factor in "knowing your gasoline." gasoline." the MVMA Vice President says, is knowing the detergent it should have. Today's Today's motor vehicles often need an extra cleaning boost from their gasoline. If a ear or light duty truck has fuel injection. injection. it needs detergent gasoline. A fuel injection engine operates without à carburetor, spraying computer-measured fuel to cacti cylinder. Using a gasoline tlial lacks detergents. Bowditeli says, can result in a buildup of gas residue deposits in the fuel injector's tiny crevices. "A badly clogged injector needs professional professional cleaning out. but sometimes a switch to a detergent-based gasoline can correct the problem." lie adds. One old-fashioned method of earing lor your engine still gets good points, however. Take your car on a vacation. "Five hours of steady highway driving using a detergent-based gasoline will do an excellent job of cleaning the engine." Howditclt says. over the cooler air conditioner's evaporator. evaporator. moisture also condenses on it. just like on that can of cold soda pop. 'i bis moisture collects on the evaporator, and is discharged outside the ear after it accumulates accumulates as a liquid. This is the maimer in which the ail conditioner dries the interior air as it cools, and therefore reduces the tendency tendency for the windows to fog. If the idea of using your air conditioner conditioner to assist in defrosting your windows windows sounds too qflhcat. then at least take the other piece of advice living offered offered by Saab. Pit!cut dvlmuralion During the winter. Saab says, your car's air conditioning system should lie switched on once or twice a month, and tail five or 10 minutes each time. This practice helps prevent deterioration of compressor gaskets and seals. When you run your air conditioner, the compressor is lubricated by a special oil which circulates with the refrigerant. When you do run the air conditioner in winter, he sure the outside air temperature temperature is above approximately 35°F. Bright, cozy sunrooms are an economical alternative to standard room additions.
