KAHN AUCTION. SERVICES, (416-683-0041). The Skate '88 Con mittee hopes to sell up to 750 seats in the new Bowmanville Bowmanville Recreation Complex as part of its $1.2 million fund-raising drive. And, for a donation of less than $1 per day, you too can purchase your seat in the new sports complex. While a number of the area's leading leading businesses and industries have already made their donation, now is the time for individuals to join the Skate '88 team. For a donation of $1,000 (which can be spread over three years), individual individual donors are recognized as supporters supporters of the recreation complex and will have their name engraved on a plaque on an arena seat and also a larger plaque which will hang in the lobby of the building. Mace Armstrong and Bob Schumacher, Schumacher, two of the members of the committee responsible for soliciting individual pledges from arena users and the community at large, note that already close to 100 of the seats have been sold. It's the recognition of the gift that many of the donors find attractive. "I think 99.9 per cent of the people on this earth like recognition. Tnis is an opportunity opportunity for people to leave their mark on the community," said Mr. Armstrong. Mr. Schumacher added that the donors of $1,000 or more will be thanked not only by the plaques on various portions of the building but also by permanent plaques in the lobby. lobby. This form of permanent recognition recognition will remain with the Bowmanville Bowmanville Recreation Complex and would be transferred to a new facility if, in . the future, one is required. Mr. Schumacher regrets that the old Bowmanville Arena lacks some similar kind of permanent record of the original donors so that their names could be recorded in the new facility. The committee members note that although the $1,000 commitment is a sizeable sum, it can be broken down into various options for payment. The money can be pledged over a three- year period and Mr. Armstrong points out that this reduces the cost to only 92 cents per day. Furthermore, the donation is deductible deductible for income tax purposes, which means that (depending on the donor's tax bracket), the total cost is less than 75 cents for most people. In reply to a number of commonly asked questions concerning the sale of arena seats, Mr. Armstrong and Mr: Schumacher made the following points: Donors need not be individuals. They may be businesses, Scout troops, individual hockey teams, or any other other organization having an interest in seeing the town's newest community facility take shape. Plaques recognizing the $1,000 gifts may bear the name of an individual individual or a family or an organiza tion. They can also be contributed in memory of someone. The name of the donor will be recorded recorded on a gold colored plaque with black lettering on the top of each seat back. "That's the most prominent position position that we could find," Mr. Schumacher Schumacher explained. Since the recreation facility is more than just an arena, persons who aren't connected with hockey or skating skating may be interested in making a contribution. That's because of the fact that the adjoining meeting room capable of seating up to 700 persons will provide a base for other non- athletic activities in the Town of Newcastle. Mr. Armstrong and Mr. Schumacher Schumacher noted that the purchase of a seat does not mean that the donor has access to that particular seat during a hockey game. There's no connection between buying a seat and buying a ticket to some future event held in tne arena. Rather, the unique recognition proram proram is a tangible way of thanking lose individuals willing to make a serious commitment to the future growth of their home town. Just as larger donors have purchased entire rooms, penalty boxes, and other parts of the arena, so the individual donor will have a similar opportunity to be recognized. At the moment, the Skate '88 fundraising fundraising has reached $735,000 and is continuing to climb towards the objective objective of $1.2 million. If each of the arena's 750 permanent permanent seats were to be sold, the fundraisers fundraisers would have doubled the present commitment and would have pushed the fund-raising to the $1.5 million mark. Mr. Armstrong noted that if fund- raising goes higher than the original commitment, the additional funds will be used for extras such as the development development of adjoining baseball diamonds diamonds and the installation of dividers dividers in the meeting room. These dividers will effectively turn the single single room into three separate rooms for smaller gatherings. Looking to the future, Mr. Armstrong Armstrong points out that provision has been made to add a second ice surface to the east of the existing pad. "There probably will be a twin pad up there within five years. That is the talk that I hear." Without a doubt, the new Bowmanville Bowmanville Recreation Complex will be a lasting part of the town and a well- used facility in a growing community. community. Anyone interested in purchasing a seat or making any other contribution contribution to the project is invited to call the Skate '88 office at 623-8888. A representative of the campaign would be pleased to call on donors to provide further information. Alternatively, Alternatively, pledge cards can be signed at the Skate' 88 office located in the old Bowmanville Arena. JR.
