E.O.B.A. Wins Bantam Tourney Sept her 16 - 18, 1988, Clarke/ Lome Park Baseball Association Association hosted the first annual All-Star Bantam Baseball Tournament. The Eastern Ontario Baseball Association (EOBÀ) entered a team representing representing the ten teams of the 1988 Bantam League. The main purpose of the tournament was to provide' the coaching staffs and scouts of the provincial youth team and the Toronto Blue Jays an opportunity to see the up and coming players in action. The 19 players from the EOBÀ under the coaching of Steve Terry (Peterborough) played each game to the full limit of their abilities and managed to defeat teams representing seven other baseball associations for the tournament championship. The EOBA played their first game Friday, September September 16th against the team representing the Inter- County Baseball Association. The game was a classic pitcher's dual going extra innings innings before tne ICBA team prevailed by a 4-3 score. At the plate Jeff Levy (Ajax) tripled in his only at bat driving driving the first run of the game. The other hero at the plate that night was Gary Shaw (Little Britain) who drove in the game's tying run with a solid single in the bottom of the 7th inning. Shaw went to 2nd base on tne throw to the late with no outs. The fol- owing batters were unable to bring the winning run home. ICBA went on to score in the top of the 8th off of Chad Stone (Oshawa) who took the loss. Jamie Watters (Whitby) started on the mound for the EOBA pitching pitching 3 innings of perfect ball and striking out 7 of the 9 batters he faced. The second game for the team was played on Saturday, Saturday, September 17th against a team representing the eastern eastern portion of the Central Ontario Baseball Association (COBA). The GOBA team had also lost the night before meaning the loser of this Fc game was eliminated from the tournament. EOBA found themselves on the short end of a 4-2 score going going into the bottom of the 6th inning. After Chad Stone struck out Gord Shannon (Peterborough) singled. Curtis Curtis Hodgins (Oshawa) doubled doubled and Mike Baker (Whitby) (Whitby) walked before the COBA third baseman made a throwing error with two out to allow theEOBA to score the go ahead run. Taking a lead into the top of the 7th inning inning Chad Stone was able to hold on for the win and redeem redeem himself for the loss the the previous night. At the plate Curtis Hodgins was 2 for 2 with an RBI and scored 2 runs. Jamie Watters again pitched the first 3 innings striking out 4 and giving up 1 hit. Brendan Donohue (Bowmanville) pitched the middle 2 innings and Stone completed the game for the win. • The third game' was against a strong.team, from the London. District Baseball Association! KLDBA). • .The i EOBA got off to a fast start scoring 2 runs in the top of the 1st inning on a walk to Watters, an error that allowed allowed Hodgins to reach base and a single by Corey Stillman Stillman (Peterborough) that scored the 2 runners. The EOBA lead was never threatened threatened as theyj went on to win by a 4-1 score. Shane Locky- er (Peterborough) went 2 for 3 at the. plate and Curtis Hodgins was table to pick up 2 RBI's. The story of the game was the pitching of Jamie Jamie Watters. He had the LDBA batters off guard all game long with a good assortment assortment of fastball s and off- speed pitches. Watters faced 23 batters, striking out 10, walking 3 and allowing 1 run on 3 hits. The win over LDBA put the EOBA into the semifinals semifinals against a strong team from Toronto. Chad Stone started on thè mound for the EOBA but was unable to keep the Toronto bats quiet for more than 3 innings. Jeff Levy attempted to shut down Toronto but he too was unsuccessful. For the first time in the tournament Simon Gosgnach was able to hold Toronto to only 2 hits over the last 3 innings. The EOBA was only able to push across 1 run during the first 6 innings of the game and it appeared the weekend might finally be over. However, the bats came alive in the top of the 7th inning, inning, and with some aggressive aggressive running on the bases the EOBA was able to come out on top with a 4-3 win. For his efforts on the mound Simon Gosgnach was selected the MVP for the game. Again it was Lockyer with the not bat going 3 for 4 at the plate, including including a triple and the game winning RBI. Brendan Donohue pitch-hit in the 7th, doubling in the game tying run. As the team from COBA west entered the ball park for the championship game, the talk around the field was who was this team from EOBA and how did they get this- far?- The > EOBA 1 again found themselves down late in the game, by a 4-2 score. Gosgnach started the game on tne mound but was only able to last 2 innings. Mike Baker (Whitby) came on to pitch in the 3rd inning allowing allowing only 2 hits for the rest of the game and striking out 4 COBA batters. As has been the case in the previous games the EOBA got their bats going in the top of the 6th to pull in front and then added an insurance run in the top of the 7th to pull out a 7-4 win and capture the championship. In the final game at the plate Jeff Pickell (Oshawa) was 2 for 5 with 3 RBI's, Corey Stillman was 2 for 4 with an RBI, Gary Shaw was 2 for 4 with 2 RBI's, Chris Roebuck (Belleville) (Belleville) was 2 for 3 with an RBI. As was the case in the semi-final game the winning pitcher Mike Baker was named the game MVP. For the weekend Shane Lockyer finished with a .586 batting average, Gary. Shaw batted .400 with 4 RBI's, Jeff Pickell had 5 RBI's, and Curtis Curtis Hodgins had 3 RBI's. The pitching was led by Watters with a 0.69 earned run average, average, and 21 strike outs in 13 innings of pitching. Other members of the team were Charles Hall (Co- bourg), Mark Harmsworth (Ajax), Shayne Keddy (Whitby), Jason Kiely (Bowmanville), (Bowmanville), Mike Reardon (Ajax), ana Mike Reid (Little Britain). Curtis Sparkes (Pickering) and Brad Robin-, son (Port Hope) were also named to the team but were: unable to compete on the ■ weekend.
