School in Brighton Leads Contributions For Terry Fox Fund For the second year in a row, a high school in the small town of Brighton, east lei of Cobourg, is leading all other high schools in Ontario in the amount it has raised for the annual Terry Fox Run. Ann McDonald, one of the staff organizers of the September September run, said about 670 staff and students at East Northumberland Secondary School participated in the run, raising slightly over $14,000. That money will be presented presented to cancer society officials officials at a special assembly at the school on October 28th starting at 10 a.m. which Remo Mancini, the provincial provincial minister responsible for the disabled, and Tom Holland, Holland, a young cancer victim, will attend. Holland, a 24 year old Markham resident, was diagnosed diagnosed as having Hodgkin's Hodgkin's Disease when he was 19 years old. Holland said he will tell the students about his relationship with cancer and what he went through. He underwent six months of chemotherapy treatment and two operations. According to his father, the disease is now in remission remission and their hopes are that the disease has been beaten. Geri Berholz, co-ordinator for schools for the Terry Fox Run, describes Holland as "a really remarkable fellow. He does a tremendous amount of community work," and holds down a full time position position as a baker. Others in attendance at the assembly will include provincial and local cancer society officials, and representatives representatives from local ' community community groups. Last year, Betty Fox, Terry Terry Fox's mother, delivered an emotional address at the school, thanking students for .their work, and officially opening the school's Terry ..FoxAuditorium. ..^shbc.. Yelverton News By H. Malcolm Election fever has taken a firm grip on Manvers Twsp. residents this week as one of the largest field of candidates candidates ever to our knowledge has filed Nomination papers at our Municipal office in Bethany Bethany on Monday, October 17th. Presuming that a list of those nominated has already been forwarded to the local papers, we shall not try to duplicate same. With the retirement of Reeve Bob Brown of Ponty- pool who has served Manvers Manvers Twsp in every capacity in Council off and on for many years, an opportunity was provided for a major transition. Two candidates are nominated nominated for both Reeve and Deputy Reeve and as of 3 p.m. Monday, nine for councillor councillor and two Manvers residents residents have been nominated for Victoria Board of Education Education for combined area of Manvers, Emily and Ome- mee. Among the nine folk (eight males and one female) there appears one name that has a very familiar ring. Perhaps Perhaps because it belongs to your Yelverton scribe. After many years of being involved in public service in one area of endeavour or another, another, we find we miss such activity. We have no axe to grind with anyone and feel that we could because of past experiences, make a positive contribution to the business-like operation of our Municipal Council. Times change, as well they should, and we must continually continually adapt to new situations to go with the flow rather than be stumbling blocks to the paths of progress. The next few weeks could be quite interesting. In case this information has not already been forwarded, forwarded, enclosed find the list of candidates nominated for Municipal Office for Manvers Manvers Twsp as of Monday 3 p.m. For Reeve - Bariy Pickering Pickering (Incumbent Deputy Reeve), Wayne Bulman.
