i The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville. October 26, 1988 Letter to the Editor Dear Mr. James: re: Town of Bowmanville Planning File DEV 88:39 Cleric s File #60.30.440. Proposed re-zoning of parcel of land in Part of Lot 11, Con. 1, former Town of Bowmanville, known as 58 and 60 Liberty Street S. . As a member of a group of citizens opposed to this rezoning, rezoning, I have attended the General Purpose and Administration Administration Committee of Juy 4th, 1988 wherein the report report was referred back to staff pending "receipt of all comments from outside agencies". This application for re-zoning is to be retabled retabled earlier than anticipated anticipated at a meeting scheduled for October 31st, 1988. Formal valid reasons for preservaton of the area as a residential neighbourhood were presented at the July 4th meeting. However, no one was given an opportunity opportunity for rebuttal, nor to express the emotional nor physical stress this type of action has had on members of our neighbourhood. I can only speak for myself myself in this instance, but I assure assure you I have been so emotionally emotionally upset with the pressure required to even approach council on this matter that I have been liter- ally physically ill. No senior ' citizen should have to coun ter the machinations of encroachment encroachment of commercial development into their residential residential area. There are a number of seniors and widows in this particular neighbourhood who have raised families without many of the "perks" of today's generation, and ask only to be able to enjoy our retirement years quietly in our own homes. We are still attempting to maintain our peaceful surroundings surroundings but for how long? Are we to be continually "badgered" by developers attempting attempting to encroach into residential areas? I am aware we cannot stop expansion, expansion, but when will it nave a humane side? Perhaps, also, some people people are not aware that there are others in this world who have no desire for, nor are they impressed by, power, prestige or money. This is not to say they ore uninformed. uninformed. uneducated, nor naive. At one time they did put some faith in their elected elected representatives (at all government levels) to do just that - REPRESENT.- and to protect the electorate's interest. interest. However, over the years and with good reason, a great deal of cynicism has set in. In the past and probably probably in the future, the "take the money and run" mentali- 1; W t, ft" . Consideration is given only to brick and concrete construction. construction. Mahatma Ghandi had his own set of seven deadly sins - two of which I quote: "Commerce without morality" morality" and "Politics without principle" principle" Young families come to this town to raise children in more compatible surroundings surroundings than they can find in the cities. Now, Bowmanville is becoming the brick and concrete concrete community they wished to avoid. Therefore, I would suggest suggest to candidates for council to look to the future of this town as a place to live, with residential areas remaining as the core of Bowmanville, and not as a town of concrete concrete and parking lots -or as a town to drive through on the way to elsewhere. Central Public School News A social time was enjoyed by members of nine branches branches of Durham West District Women's Institute at Solina on October 18. The Fun Fair is an annual event, this year hosted by the Solina branch. Guests were greeted at the door by District President President Vi Ashton and Lois Yel- lowlees, representing Solina. At 2 o'clock, President Ashton welcomed the guests. It was with sadness that she announced the death of Doreen Doreen Lake, a member of Newtonville W. I. who was to have taken part in a skit. The fun began as Gwen Malcolm and Norma Frew of the Nestleton Branch portrayed portrayed two farmers discussing discussing farm prices, recycling and the benefits their wives received from W.I. Minutes of a Maple Grove W. M.S, meeting, 1927, were read by Brenaa Metcalfe and revealed that some secretaries secretaries do record everything everything that is said. Many friends and relatives of those present were active in the community planning then. Hampton presented a pantomime with Verna Bryant and Eileen Warder. They didn't announce a title so perhaps "The Lady and the Tramp" is appropriate. Prizes donated by each branch were won by Marion Peters- "The Queen and her Family", Olive Patfield - Wool for a sweater, Lois Yel- lowlees - "Folk" Dish, Verna Robinson - Casserole Carrier, Carrier, Eva Naef - Travel Bowls, Marilyn Dow - Box of Groceries, Groceries, Faye Vice - 1/2 bu. apples, Helen Couroux - pr. of towels, Pat Rickard - Christmas Door Decoration. Vi Ashton thanked the members of Durham West for providing her the opportunity opportunity to attend the F.W. I.C. Convention in Newfoundland Newfoundland thispast summer. The Fair consisted of a bake table and country store and was well stocked for the many eager purchasers. Afternoon tea was provided provided by the hostesses. Thank you Solina. Shirley Brown.
