Last July 1st, on Canada Day, TM English underwent a double lung transplant at Toronto General Hospial. TM English ended his Ice Breaker speech thanking an unknown 16 year old Connecticut Connecticut boy for giving him a second chance at life, and urging everyone, everywhere, everywhere, to fill out organ donor donor cards which will, perhaps, allow others a second chance. For this very informative informative and moving speech Toastmaster Iris Lambier presented TM English with the Best Speakers Trophy. TM Lambier also thanked her other two speakers TM Helen Bryden and TM Nancy Nancy Barnes. Chairman Marg Kropf opened the business session with a toast to "Travel" then expertly travelled through the evening's meeting of minutes, committee reports and correspondence adhering adhering to good parliamentary procedure. The women's group is seeking information on why and when Haydon's name changed from Charlesville. Club 21. member Janet Mayer, who has spent hours researching the name change, has found only one thread of information that seems to be a longshot at best. Apparently, a religious group called "The Disciples of Cnrist" had a church in Bowmanville. A man named A.S. Hayden was supposedly the preacher. Whether or not this fact has something to do with the naming of Haydon, Mrs. Mayer doesn't know. The first edition of "The Histories and Recipes of Haydon Ontario" contained numerous recipes but also had information on places such as the Haydon Mill, Haydon Church and Haydon Haydon Public School. Mrs. Mayer said the first edition, published in 1982, "sold like hotcakes." The book was pretty much the brainchild of Mrs. Mayer. When she first moved to the community she became a member of Club 21 and wanted to do something to help with their fundraising. fundraising. She had moved into an older house and started re- seaching its history and became became further interested in the history of the community. community. At that time, the idea to combine the history with a cookbook occurred to her. She said: "The people in the village have always been very friendly and willing to draw you into the community." community." So the book about the community was something to give back to the people of Haydon. She said everyone really enjoyed the last edition, particularly particularly the new residents. Haydon Welcome Wagon use to give the cookbook as gifts to those who had recently recently moved to the area. The money raised from selling the book goes back into the community. The Hospital Auxiliary to Memorial Hospital Bowmanville held an Autumn Luncheon at Trinity United Church on October 26 as a fund-raising effort. It was the fifth annual luncheon for the group who planned on having 250 attend the luncheon. Pictured helping serve are: Joan Appleton and Lillian Dippell, both auxiliary members. Toastmasters Break Ice man TM Gerald Brown directed directed the members to recreate recreate the sights and sounds of Hallowe'en in their one minute impromptu talks. Table Topics trophy went to TM Helen Bryden. The evaluators evaluators were TM Irene Kon- zelmann, TM Nellie Van- Veldhuizen, and TM Marilyn Dow. Winning the trophy for Best Evaluator was TM VanVeldhuizen. As the General Evaluator, TM Tricia Eyman was impressed impressed with the evening's program and complimented the Toastmasters who made it all happen.
