Unit #16 Oshawa As everyone knows Mrs. Avery is a teacher who really really loves music. She has been teaching the songs "Teach Me" and "Yellow Submarine" Submarine" to her class. Kerry-Ann's favourite subject is math. Tammy Bunce loves sports and writing poems and stories. She has had great success lately because one of her stories has been published by our in-school publishing company. It is now in the library for students students to borrow. Her whole class agrees about one thing - Mrs. Avery is a great teacher. By April Turner Don't buy any books for children this Christmas until you've seen the assortment at the Great Canadian Book Fair. We are holding the Fair on December 8 and 9th. Prices Prices range as low as 99 cents for the little anniken books to about $5.95. Come and support the library library and enjoy selecting books for the whole family to share. Ms. Brown did not know very much about the safety patrol in September when she took over from Mrs. Avery Avery but she is learning quickly. Every month patrollers that have done a particularly good job have their names entered in a draw. Some of them had to act quickly when there were speeding cars around. The patroller for this month is Lisa Ng. By Andrew Break Last Wednesday I enter- viewed Mrs. Michaelis. For Remembrance Day the class is reading stories about why we have Remembrance Day. They are making poppies, CUSTOM FRAMING 432-1580 posters and singing songs. In Environmental Studies they are studying Rural and Urban Communities. The class had a visit from Mrs. Rickard on how to operate a farm. They are going on a trip to a water supply plant and the new Town Hall. Here is a poem by Amanda Ford, a student in the class. Memories Each minute is like an hour. Each hour is like a day. And when I'm without you. My heart becomes so grey. À tear will fall across my face. For a moment of despair. So I will remember you. Everyday and everywhere. everywhere. Reported by Gregg Ogilvie. Ogilvie. Report Just think you're standing on the edge of the pool, the instructor says GO and you plunge deep into the watery fun. From an Interview with Sam Whately, Dustin Forsey and Jamie Powell, I found ' out that there is a lot more to swimming lessons than work. There is fun and excitement. excitement. I asked them how they felt when they walked onto the pool deck. They said that they felt funny, excited and warm. Jamie Powell described described the water as RES- FRESHING. During their lesson they play a lot of games, BUT they DO work towards their badges. Parking Lot Is Delayed Employees at Cowan Pontiac Buick in Bowmanville Bowmanville will have to wait a little longer for a new place to park their cars. An application to change the zoning on a parcel of land on the south side of Church St. by Cowan Pontiac Pontiac Buick has been referred back to staff by a Town of Newcastle committee. The general purpose and administration committee decided on November 21 to refer the application back to staff until all the required agencies had commented on it The rezoning application would permit a 33 space parking lot for staff employees employees on land between Front and Liberty streets on Church St. A staff report said that a number of objections to the application have been made by residents in the area. At Monday's meeting, one resident, Heather Rowe, presented presented council with a petition containing 44 names protesting protesting the application. She said the parking lot would "alter the residential character of Church St." She added that the demolition demolition of the two houses on the present property (where the parking lot will go) would create a hazard and that noise, dust and pollution weren't ideal for the residents residents on the street. Another resident told council the extra traffic and noise on the street would be a hazard to the children who walk to school in the area. Bits and Pieces COMPUTER JOYS - The writer used to have mechan- j ical problems with linotypes and hot metal, but ; thought all those things would be in the past now that computers were with us. 'T ain't so, we've just redone this doggone column twice and are now on the third round with it. They tell us there was a faulty diskette in the machine and what we'd been typing couldn't be saved and sent to the typesetters. So, we'll do it again and hope for improvement. Maybe the election was too much for it and it was upset about Free Trade.
