LOCAL DRIVERS FROM PLAYER'S SERIES -- Hampton's Randy MacDonald is the top local driver in the Players/GM Motorsport Series. He finished the year with a ninth place standing and recorded one win at Mosport on May 23. Other local drivers who have been in the running include: Mark Schill, of Oshawa; Doug Beatty, of Uxbridge; Claude Poirier, of Peterborough; and Tom Clark, of Oshawa. The overall winner of the series was Richard Spenard. SKATERS WIN MEDALS -- Congratulations to Jennifer Jennifer and David Urwin, of the Bowmanville Figure, -.Skating Club. They won the silver medal at the Eastern Ontario Sectional Competition held in Ottawa during the past weekend. The dance pair skated in the juvenile dance category in a competition which involved involved skaters from Whitby to the Quebec border. We hope to have their photo in next week's Statesman. Tykes Beat Bowmanville 'i Sunday, November 20 - Newcastle Travelled to Bowmanville Bowmanville to play the MacGregor MacGregor I.D.A. Tykes. Newcastle Newcastle was quite excited sporting their new sweaters playing in the new arena, but didn't allow the impressive surroundings to defer them from the task at hand. As in the game the night before the local local lads stayed out of the penalty box (8 minors) and were rewarded with their second win in two nights. The first period saw Newcastle's Newcastle's Brian Rodd open the scoring assisted by Daryl Burke and Marty Robinson. The second period saw Bowmanville come up with two unanswered goals to go ahead 2-1. Scoring for Bowmanville Bowmanville were Jeremy Laird, and Sean Dalton. Five Straight Wins for Toro Pee Wees The Saltfleet Tournament of Champions proved to be an excellent opportunity to watch and cheer hockey played at a high standard of excellence. On Friday, November 17, the Canadian Tire Toro Peewee A team played their first game at noon against Leamington. Jeff Murphy opened the scoring in the first period assisted by Ryan Robinson and Chris Aitken. The game remained close until later in the second period period when Bowmanville's Collin Collin Taggart and Jason Cros- bie scored to give us a three goal lead with assists going to Ryan Robinson, Jeff Murphy Murphy and Steve deBlois. Leamington scored with 46 seconds left in the second period. Bowmanville came on strong in the third and played an excellent defensive defensive period. Our second game was at 9:30 on Friday night against Stouffville. We have tied Stouffville twice and defeated defeated them once this year. Even though the parents were tired, the Bowmanville team had lots of energy. After two periods it was 0-0. The big day finally came on Sunday. We played Salt- fleet again. If we won it it was all over. If we lost, we had one more try for the championship. Both Saltfleet and Bowmanville Bowmanville came out strong. Bowmanville went ahead 2- 0 in the first half of the game only to have Saltfleet come back and tie it 2-2 in the second second period. Collin Taggart and Jason Crosbie got our first two goals with assists going to Sean Brown, Ryan Robinson and Collin Taggart. Taggart. The game was very fast paced with lots of scoring chances for both teams. Finally, Finally, two minutes into the last period, Jason Crosbie, unassisted, got the clincher and Bowmanville defeated Saltfleet 3-2 to win the Salt- fleet Tournament of Champions Champions without a loss. Each team member and coaching staff received lovely lovely silver rings for their great effort. Three of our players were presented with large trophies trophies as they were voted to the all star team from the peewee division. The three were Chris McCarthy as best goalie of the peewee division, division, Ryan Robinson as best centre, and Jason Crosbie as best left winger. The team has come a long way during the last month. Novices Post Victory On Saturday; November 19 the All Canadians Novices recorded their first win of the season, with a 3-1 victory over V&G. After a scoreless first period, Chris Watson opened the scoring mid-way through the second period with Bryan Lowery and Erik Griffin assisting. The second period saw the Canadians tighten up defensively defensively taking away some good scoring chances from V&G's sharp shooters. Defencemen Defencemen Chris Mann, Chris McKenzie, Robbie Mac- Chayne and Erik Griffin played their best games this season. In the third period Chris Watson's stick handling ability ability paid-off with a nice pass ' from the corner to Adam Powell who had nosiioned himself in front of tne goal to score and give the Canadians Canadians n 2-0 lead. "New Look" Toro Pee Wees Win Twice Against Markham "Doyle Raiders", played back to back league games, against Markham. On Saturday, Saturday, 19 November at Darlington Darlington Arena, the visitors took a 2-0 first lead, before Bowmanville struck back with 5 consecutive goals. The new look has given the team a spirited lift and the players are known by name as well as their number. On Sunday, the team travelled to Markham and beat the hometown team 5-2. Bowmanville's final marker came from Alan McCullough with assist to Jamie Brake and Bruce Hamum. The weekend contest displayed displayed solid goaltending from both Robbie Robbins and Jamie Doyle. The team statistic show, that the team's goal against average is 2.45.
