This, combined with the excellent work of the Durham Durham Recycling Depot has made us leaders in the blue box recycling programme in the province of Ontario. We are also blessed with the presence of a number of citizen groups; such as the Port Granby Monitoring Committee, the Citizens for a Safe Environment, the Committee Committee of Clarke Constituents, Constituents, the Darlington Group, the Durham Nuclear Awareness Awareness and the G.O.O.D (Garbage (Garbage of Ontario Diminished) Committee and other similar groups, who successfully put people's concerns into action for the benefit of us all. Without Without them we would have many angry and frustrated citizens who would have environmentally environmentally hostile things done to them rather than being being able to work towards a safe, sound and economically economically beneficial future for us and our children and grand children. Last, but by no means least, are the politicians at the local, regional, provincial and federal levels who have consistently supported the citizens through word and deed to make Durham East or the Town of Newcastle a place of which we can all be proud. Recycling has been well received by the local people. Recycling is not necessarily a very profitable venture on its own but when the costs of recycling are compared with the costs of buying land for a landfill site, plus tne costs involved involved in environmental hearings, plus the long term costs to the environment plus the cost of depreciated land and home values surrounding surrounding a landfill site, the economics of recycling win out all the time. We presently are recycling recycling cans, bottles, paper, and a limited amount of P.E.T. bottles as well as some leaves. This is a good start but it is only a start. What needs to be done now is the recycling of mixed plastics. The G.O.O.D. Committee has investigated this possibility possibility and has come to the conclusion conclusion that the recycling of mixed plastics is. possible. Mixed plastics can be recycled recycled to make shopping baskets baskets (just check the Knob Hill stores), laundry baskets, fence posts, guard rails, lawn furniture, home composters, etc., etc. It is time to move into the second phase of recycling and add plastics to the recycling recycling programme. Yes, that means some money will have to be allocated allocated to the project but is it not worth the investment? Experts tell us that 35- 42% of our waste is made up of plastic products. Many of these products do not disin- m ml Birthday Celebrations Hi, my name is Aleisha Marchant and this is my brother Christopher who is 2 1/2 months old.
