January 18.1989 Section Two Region Proceeding With Cardboard Ban Ontario Hydro Gate Collection Raises Over $5,000 m Cardboard won't be accepted accepted at landfill sites in Durham Region any longer. Durham Regional Councillors Councillors approved a by-law on January 11 to reduce the amount of clean corrugated cardboard entering landfill sites from industrial and commercial producers. Effective February 1, all loads containing more than 50 per cent cardboard will be banned from all landfill sites and transfer stations in the Region. This date coincides with the day Metro Toronto has set to stop cardboard from entering their sites, including Brock West in Pickering where Durham currently sends a major portion of its garbage. The Works Department has estimated that of the 280,000 tonnes of solid waste produced each year, 10 to 15 per cent is old corrugated cardboard. Ihc banning is part of the Region's plans to reduce waste by 25 per cent by 1903. Prior to the ban being implemented, implemented, notices of violation violation of the impending by-law will be issued to commercial and industrial producers of waste cardboard. Residential cardboard isn't included in the ban. The Works Department plans to phase in the ban by first rejecting all loads containing containing more than 50 per cent cardboard and banning all loads containing more than 20 per cent after August 31.
