Lindsay 324-9898 H*R BLOCK THt INCOMf TAI IPICUUm Bowmanville Mall 243 King St. E 623-9400 by Chris Clark A group of concerned citizens met at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Bowmanville last Wednesday to launch the "winnable war," a campaign campaign against pornography in the Newcastle area. The 75 persons present spent the bulk of the evening viewing a film by Dr. James Dobson, a noted Christian speaker and teacher in the United States. He related some of his experiences experiences and observations culled from the time he spent on President Rea- an's Commission on Pornography uring 1984 and 1985. The 11 person commission plumbed the depths of the pornography industry in the United States, and their findings are shocking shocking and troubling. The film and related materials are serving as the basis for a local campaign campaign to educate people about the horrors horrors of pornography, particularly of hard-core pornography. Organizers also are using a report co-written by the Ontario Provincial Police and the Metropolitan Police which analyzes and explains the problem from a Canadian Canadian viewpoint, Carolyn Neuman, of Bowmanville, Bowmanville, helped initiate the meeting and is working with others to plan a strategy strategy to combat pornography in the area. Reverend Wayne Chatterton of St. Andrew's points out the criminal aspect of pornography, "If the two police police forces are interested in the problem, problem, you know it's not just a bunch of fanatical Christians." In fact, the problem goes well beyond beyond what many people consider pornography pornography to be. The worst of it involves involves acts of such a perverse nature that physical and emotional injury is the price paid by the participants. Children, some not even two years old, are kidnapped, enslaved, and used in the production of pornograph- ic films and publications. What police want to make very clear is the way in which the material pervades society. Canada's big cities do not have a monopoly on the illness. Small communities also are flooded with magazines and videos. The group which gathered last week is anxious to alert people about the problem arid about possible solutions. solutions. Police are powerless to press charges if there has been no formal complaint. Without such a complaint from the public, judges will throw it out of court because the basis for establishing establishing obscenity in Canadian law rests largely on community standards. standards. If people simply look the other way, judges have no choice but to interpret interpret that as acceptance. Of the 75 people who met last Wednesday, 30 volunteered to assist on a committee or help in some other way to start a campaign designed to rid Newcastle of pornography material. material. Anyone wishing to help in any way can contact Reverend Chatterton at St, Andrew's United Church.
