This fact has been noted by the best experts in the world when they met in Toronto last summer to discuss the depletion of the protective ozone layer. Ordinary citizens with the leadership of environmentally environmentally concerned people of all ages were able to bring this concern to the attention of politicians around the globe. We have long since discovered discovered that tne environment environment is everyone's concern. A nuclear disaster in Chernobyl, Chernobyl, Russia, wiped out the Laplander's culture in Sweden Sweden and caused concern about the safety of food all over northern Europe, even as far south as France. When Mount St. Helen blew one third of its top into fine dust it affected the climate climate of most of the countries countries around the world. We all realize that the cutting down of the rain forest forest will have a profound effect effect on our supply of oxygen. When we create an environmental environmental hazard it does not stay within the boundaries boundaries of the place where it was created but has an influence influence on an area far beyond that boundary. How far beyond beyond the boundaiy depends upon the size, location, nature nature of the hazard and prevailing prevailing wind and water currents. currents. We must stop thinking of the dump and the incinerator incinerator and start looking at the area beyond the boundaries. How is the facility affecting affecting the air quality of people in all directions? How is the facility affecting affecting water sources, wells and fish? How is the facility affecting affecting your garden produce? produce? How is the facility affecting affecting the health of young children? How is property value affected? What are the long term effects on our community community and our way of life? If the answers are bothersome bothersome or causing concern then the dump or incinerator incinerator does not fit into our life style. The answers should lead us to examine possible alternatives. alternatives. What can be done with the garbage we create besides besides dumping it or burning it? The first and most obvious obvious alternative is to not create the garbage in the first place. It we don't bring the articles into our home we won't have to throw it out. We can do with less. Do we need all those plastic bags (which last for 300 ears) or could we use a gorge gorge can? Garbage cans can be used over and over again and when they are finally beaten beyond usable condition condition can be resmelted as scrap metal. We really can do without plastic bags. Do we really need all of those plastic grocery bags? We can use alternatives. Knob Hill has shown leadership leadership in this area. Why not take a Knob Hill basket instead instead of bringing all of those plastic bags home? Instead of buying things in plastic containers why not buy them in re-usable glass containers? If a product product is over packaged why not select one with less packaging material? Clothing should never be thrown out but taken to the Salvation Army Drop Box or re-used in another form. We can reduce our gar bage to a minimum. Whatever Whatever we do will have an impact impact far beyond our own boundary. Negative or positive, positive, the environmental impacts impacts go beyond the curb in front of our house. Our neighbours may even follow our example.
