News from Manvers Area By Beverley Fisher Church News The Lenten services for all the churches in the area will be held every Wednesday Wednesday during Lent. The first night was Wednesday, Feb- ruaty 8 and the service was at St. Paul's Parish Hall from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. The topic of the whole series is "Who is Christ?" and this will be explored through films and books. St. Mary's Anglican Church, Lifford Reverend George Quibell took the service of Holy Communion on Sunday, February 5, that being the last Sunday after the Ephi- phany or the Transfiguration Transfiguration of the Lord. The readings readings were taken from Exodus 24: 29-35 and II Corinthians Corinthians 3:12 to 4:2. The Gospel was taken from Luke 9:28-36. This year the Easter Easter Vigil will be celebrated at St. Mary's on Holy Saturday, Saturday, March 25 at 9:30 p.m. This service for preparation for Easter is one of the most ancient services of the Church. It begins in darkness. darkness. A new fire is lit and the paschal candle, the light of Christ, is carried into the Church. Then the whole story story of salvation is told from the Garden of Eden to the Garden of the empty Tomb. This is the traditional night for Baptism followed by the first Eucharist of Easter. St. Mary's .Annual Vestry Meeting The Annual Vestry Meeting Meeting was held at the home of Vera Timms on Sunday, February 5 at 7 p.m. There was a good attendance. Reverend David Montgomery Montgomery and Reverend George Quibell presided over the meeting. Peter Bottom! Bottom! ey and Willie Johnson remain as wardens but new positions filled were: Viola Sisson as Deputy Warden and Jody Malcolm as Youth Warden. After 22 1/2 years, Mrs. Vera Timms graciously passed the duties of Chancel Guild over to Mrs. Mavis Bell who is very capable of handling the task. There was no new business business brought forth but a lengthy discussion evolved around the new basement area. The building committee committee gave an up-to-date report report stating that the general shell and floor have been completed. The final grading and landscaping will wait until spring as well as the inside carpentry work. Anyone Anyone wishing to give a donation donation to the building fund should contact the wardens. Reverend Montgomery closed the meeting and good food and fellowship followed. St. Paul's Annual Vestry Meeting The Annual Vestiy meeting meeting was held on Sunday, February 5 at St. Paul's. The meeting followed a pot- luck lunch after morning service. The new wardens are Gregory Wood (Rector's Warden) and Elva Harding (People's Warden). Bethany UCW The Bethany UCW met at the church hall on Monday, Monday, January 6 at 2 p.m. There were about 16 in attendance. attendance. The group enjoyed a skit entitled 'Why Rray For Others?' The next meeting will be replaced by the World Day of Prayer to be held on Friday, Friday, March 3 at 2 p.m. The theme for the service will be "Teach Us To Pray" and it was prepared by the women of Burma. The service will be shared by the ACW of St. Paul's and there is an open invitation for all to attend. The Annual Meeting of the UCW was held on Tuesday, Tuesday, February 7 at St. James' United Church in Peterborough Peterborough from 8:30 to 3 p.m. Three UCW members from Bethany attended and there were over 100 in attendance attendance in all. The special speaker of the day was Reverend Reverend Judith Vaclavik who spoke of her time in Zaire, Africa. The theme for the day was "Forward in His Steps." . Happy Days' Dance A good time was had by all at the Happy Days' Dance held Saturday, February February 4 at the Pontypool Community Centre. The dance was sponsored by the Pontypool Church Volunteers Volunteers and they were very pleased with the turnout and deemed the dance a great success. All proceeds will be donated to the Ponty- B ool United Church. D.J. ennis Franfesan was "fantastic" "fantastic" and it was very difficult difficult choosing winners of the best dressed Fonz and Joa- nie. Social Joyce and Frank Edwards Edwards have returned from a three week trip to Daytona Bench, Florida. They had terrific weather and a very good trip.
