18 The Canadian Statesman, Commissioner Speaks to Local Guides by Karen Thompson At our district dinner that was held in January, a few words for thought were given to us by our Division Commissioner, Sheryl Curtin. Curtin. I would like to try to paraphrase her speech and show you what Guiding means to many of its members. members. We were asked to think of why we joined Guiding. Whether through a friend or to get our daughters involved involved or maybe to fill in the hours in the week you didn't know what to do with. Then we were asked to think of the reasons we stayed, after the reasons for joining no longer existed. Here is Sheryl's definition definition of GUIDING which really says it all. G - is because Guiding gives the same opportunities for personal growth to the Guider as it does the girls. It teaches us flexibility, adaptability adaptability and acceptance of others. We carry these with us to the other aspects of our life. U - is because Guiding gives us unity - that overwhelming overwhelming feeling of belonging belonging to something worthwhile, worthwhile, that we get when we walk into a room filled with other Guiders. There is never never a loss of conversation topics topics when you're in Guiding. I - is because Guiding accepts accepts our individualism and knows each Guider has something important to offer whether it's to the girls or the Administration. Not everyone everyone has to sing or be able to do crafts to capture the imagination of the Guiding game. The quietest person is often the one who has the sparkling idea for a ceremony, ceremony, camp or a training. D - is because Guiding offers offers each Guider a chance for development in many areas areas of the program that carry carry over into our day to day living. There are opportunities opportunities through training to broaden our views, improve existing skills and learn new ones. They have someone dress up as a momma momma bear and one as poppa bear and a girl or a boy as a baby bear and a Goldilocks. They all like the bear center very much.
