Dr. John Berlinsky, the speaker, a physics professor and Director of the Institute for Materials Research at McMaster University, "lives and breathes" superconductivity. superconductivity. Superconductivity occurs when certain materials lose all their resistance to electrical electrical current at very low temperatures. temperatures. Once introduced into a superconducting circuit, circuit, the electrical current would continue to flow forever. forever. Superconductivity is not new, out until recently, it only occurred at temperatures temperatures close to absolute zero. Since it is not practical to keep conductors at this temperature, superconductivity superconductivity had limited uses. Recently, Recently, however, new space age materials have been developed developed which become superconductive superconductive at much higher higher temperatures. These temperatures are still veiy cold (about 200 degrees C below room temperature) but they can be more easily reached and maintained. Possible applications include include ceramic conductors to carry large current densities densities on transmission wires across the country, circuits for very fast, high capacity computer memories or superconducting superconducting magnetic detectors detectors for a variety of electronic electronic devices, sensitive to minute changes in magnetic fields and virtually noise free.
