Carter's Bakery novices have accumulated six hard earned points in league play, by winning their last three games. Bakers 2 Canadians 1 In what was a very tough defensive game against All Canadian, Carters came out on top with a late third period period goal by Paul Drummond assisted by Mark Stephen to break a 1-1 deadlock. Carters Carters first goal was scored by Richard Saloman with assists assists going to Mike Poitias and Chad Dickens. Although his name never appears in the assist column if it wasn't for Nick Adams' great goal keeping we wouldn't be reporting these victories. Keep up the good work, Nick. Help is on the way. Bakers 5 Bonded 4 Newcastle arena was the setting for the Bakers and Bonded. Carters came out flying in the game and took an early early 2-0 lead midway through the first, only to have Bonded Bonded tie the score before the period ended. Both teams exchanged a pair of goals iri the second frame making it 4-4. Carters got lucky around the net to finish the scoring mid way through the third. Bonded did everything but nut the puck in the net in tlie last three minutes, giving Carters defense and goalkeeper some tense moments. moments. We were lucky to come out of this game with 2 points. Goal scorers for Carters were: Jeff Carter, Chris Baumhaucr, Paul Drummond, Drummond, and Nick Zdravkovski with a pair, assists going to Solomon, Drummond and Wright. There is no such thing as an easy win and this game was firing proof to that, as V&G only iced nine skaters and Carters were able to wear them down in third period period to come up with a much needed offensive game. Those boys arc too young to remember Bobby Oit, but they must-have seen videos of the great defenseman offensive offensive efforts as 6 of the games goals were scored by defensemen leading a rush and netting the much needed needed goals. With a scoreless first period period Carters opened the scoring early in the second frame on a goal by Richard Saloman assisted by Jeff Carter; from here on, the defensemen defensemen took over the show. V&G's #4 Jell' Shymr netted netted a pair only to bo^an- swered by Trevor Wright #4 for Carters earning the hat trick on the day. Chris Baumhaucr one of Carter's blueliners scored on a great solo effort. Way to go guys. Special congratulations go to Trevor for a fine fine day as he not only had the hat trick to give us the win, that evening. Trevor who shares the goal keeping job for the novice selects went on to register his share of the 4-0 shutout, against a team from Markham. With the playoffs just around the corner the boys are facing their toughest week of the schedule as they meet Jimmy's Hornets and Adam and Eve Clippers in the next two games. These three teams have been in a real dog fight for top spot all year and those next two games should give us some idea just how tough the playoffs will be. This year's senior boys volleyball team from St. Francis of Assisi School in Newcastle Village captured the B division School Board championship for the second second year in a row recently in Peterborough. From left to right they are: (back row) coach Ray McGillen, Ryan Leeder, Adam Bulman, Sean Muller, Michael Landers, Derek Anderson, (front) Larry Houston, Chris Cholette, Daryl Houston, Adam Wallace, and Eric Morra. Teamwork Leads to Jimmy's Win In a bid to reduce the gap between them and the first place position in their novice division, Jimmy's Hornets took to the ice on Saturday, February 25th with strong determination. Playing against the All-Canadians, a team with a reputation for strong goal tending and aggressive aggressive forwards, the Hornets Hornets knew that they could win with a unified team effort effort that included lots of passing, strong defense and steady goal tending Jamie Shrives, who usually plays forward, supplied the steady goaltending the rest was up to his team-mates. Less than a minute into the opening period, Mike MacLeod put Jimmy's Hornets Hornets on the scoreboard in a play that their fans have seen repeatedly in previous games. The puck was worked along the boards to behind the All-Canadian net. Wade Worsley then passed it out front where Mike's quick reflexes led to that important first goal. The remaining 14 minutes Legion Ladies Bowling League February 16/89. The Hornets took that 1-0 lead into the second period. Period two belonged to the Hornets. During this period, period, three goals were added to their side of the score- board. Jeremy Sanders, Brian Ball and Mike MacLeod MacLeod each scored while six assists assists were recorded. Among those assists was Joel Osborne, Osborne, Kris Polley, Mark Ganhao, Brad MacMaster and Derek Cummer. This certainly illustrates well the teamwork for which Jimmy's Jimmy's is known. Joel Osborne earned the "most frustrated player award" in the second period. At the 4:10 mark, the All- Canadian goalie, Jake Davis made a beautiful save on a shot from Wade Worsley. Joel was in position to take advantage of the rebound and tapped the puck into the open side of the net. the linesman whistled a goal but when he went to retrieve retrieve the puck, it was behind behind the net and therefore assumed Joel had put the puck over the net. However, to the spectators it was clear the puck did go in the net and came out under the back pipe. But the officials make the final calls, as they should, and the goal did not count. Tough luck, Joel, you played an excellent game! Jimmy's Hornets continued continued to dominate play in the third period. Two more goals brought the game score to 6- 0. Brian Ball got the first at the 13:20 mark, while Jeremy Jeremy Sanders accounted for the second goal 10 minutes later. Mark Ganhao assisted on both goals. It looked as if Hornet's goalie, Jamie Shrives might earn his first shutout when, in the last minute of play, Brad Chapman of the All- Canadians scored. Final goal tally was 6-1 for the Hornets. Thanks once again teams, for providing an exciting exciting game of hockey for the spectator's viewing pleasure.
