CONWAY PARALLEL STAGES Sometimes the bereaved tend to go through stages that parallel those of the dying person. person. This can take place both before and after the death of a loved one. That is, those close to a dying person may pass through some form of denial as soon as they learn the person has a terminal disease. "It can't be so, it can't be true that my husband is dying." Then comes anger -- at oneself, at the dying person, at the doctor, at the Fates. There is also bargaining. bargaining. "Just give him a little more time, God." Then depression. After death the same stages present themselves also, although although often in random patterns. patterns. Denial is there, and certainly certainly anger and depression. Though it is too late for bargaining, bargaining, that too may appear. However, However, in the end, most people arrive at acceptance. Just as it is healthy for a dying person to work through these stages, so it is for the survivor. DID YOU KNOW THAT When the somewhat squalid Union School in Bowmanville burned down in 1887 (some say it was deliberately deliberately set on fire), there was a public clamour for a distinct "central" common school incorporating the best aspects of an elementary school. The idea gave its name to the new institution built in the Romanesque style by the capable Whitby architect A.A. Post, on the very site of the Union School on Wellington Street. The high school portion of the old Union School was built on Queen Street. As a physical setting Central Central School was celebrated for its fine woodwork of desks made from ash, white S ine wainscotting, and oard sidewalks. Its classic appearance would change only slightly over the years most particularly with the addition to the east side of the building, and the later removal of the bell tower in 1976. -4- ■... The above and many other other Central School stories are contained in the Central School centennial history.
