I was sure that my mother had eyes in the back of her head and that my grandmother, because of her age, probably had eyes in the side of her head as well - there was simply no other explanation for their always knowing when I was thinking about doing something something I shouldn't, when I was actually doing something something I shouldn't ana when I had actually done something I shouldn't. That made me think about mothers and grandmothers grandmothers and children and eyes, how I felt when I first saw my new son and my baby daughter, the sparkle in my mother's eyes when her first grandchild actually looked at her and smiled. I can see my grandmother with my small son on her knee as she read him his favourite favourite book and how they exchanged glances of love. Graduations, marriages, so many special occasions etched in our memories because because we could see. What would it be like if I had never had the chance to see? As a mother, I would have missed so much. My family history would have been so much poorer without without the stories handed down by mother and grandmother and all the others who had actually seen the events. Cataract operations in Canada to restore sight are commonplace, but there are places in this world where such operations are more precious than we can imagine. imagine. However, in Third World Countries, where eye disease is common, there is a glimmer of hope. Through the auspices 01 Operation Eyesight Universal, sight is being restored at mobile eye clinics, clinics paid for by donations donations of ordinary Canadians Canadians from children to pensioners. pensioners. Can you believe that the gift of sight in the Developing World can be purchased for only 25 cents, or that ophthalmic cream to prevent the blinding infant disease of trachoma costs less than 75 cents? How lucky we are to have access to medical facilities, to have clean water and most of all to be able to contribute to the well-being of others. We all think of our mothers mothers and grandmothers on Mother's Day. On this Mother's Mother's Day, please think about the mothers and grandmothers grandmothers of Third World Countries, Countries, who do not have their sight, who have never seen their children or grandchildren grandchildren and who cannot live a useful life because they are blind. A gift to Operation Eyesight Universal as a tribute tribute to a mother or grandmother grandmother would be a gift of real life to someone who now has no hope. Donations may be sent to: Operation Eyesight Universal, Universal, P.O. Box 123, Stn. Goa bless you all for seeing seeing what has to be done and caring enough to do it. Esther Bird 11 Westwood Terrace S. W. Calgary, Alberta rpqn qrf>7 B&P Club News Twelve resolutions which will be voted on at the 43rd Annual Provincial Conference Conference later this month were discussed at the April meeting meeting of the Bowmanville Business Business and Professional Women's Women's Club. These resolutions, sponsored sponsored by different clubs, seek changes in various areas areas such as amending the Employment Standards Act to extend the qualifying period period for eligibility for pregnancy pregnancy leave to twenty-four weeks and to make provisions provisions for personal sick- leave and family care (the Canada Labour Code does allow for personal sick leave.) As one Minister is now responsible- for both "Labour" and "Women's "Women's Issues," one resolution asks that Women's Issues be a separate and distinct portfolio portfolio and that the provincial delegates suggest a new name, the reason being that all issues are not "Women's Issues." Thinking of the skills required required in the future, another resolution proposes to urge the Ontario Government to heighten awareness in educators educators and school counsellors counsellors for the need to encourage encourage female students to prepare for non-traditional occupations by choosing math and science courses in schools. The Bowmanville Business Business and Professional Women's Women's Club meets again on Thursday, May 18th, 1989, at the Bowmanville Lions Club at 6:30 p.m. For dinner reservations, please call Amerjit Sodhi at 623-6438 or Vivian Pickard at 623- 7221. - Irene Konzelmann. ■ 41 ; - U - - «•Ft ' :02 TIN!
