May 17. 1989 623-3303 FLASHBACK --25 YEARS AGO -- On Monday, May 11, at the new softball diamond at Memorial Park, the Junior Men's League officially opened the season with Chartran's Men's Wear meeting and defeating Sam's. The first ball was pitched by Guy Parks, with Doug Lane catching. The umpire was George Piper. FLASHBACK -- 10 YEARS AGO -- Over 60 golfers turned out for the first tournament of the year at Bow- manville Country Club on Saturday, for the Men's Opening Field Day. Despite cool weather and strong winds, Harry Fayle, Merv Scott, Howard Ormiston and Gord Vinson handed in a net score of 61 to win. MIXED TEAMS NEEDED--There will be a three-pitch mixed tournament on June 3rd and 4th at Memorial Park, Bowmanville. Additional teams are needed. For further information, call A1 Cole at 623-9280 or Susy Marshall at 623-7069. All participants are guaranteed at least three games. COMMUNITY SERVICES FLOAT NEEDS VOLUNTEERS VOLUNTEERS -- The Town of Newcastle's Community Services Services Department is looking for volunteers willing to illustrate various sports on the float which the department department is entering in the Heritage Week parade. People of all ages, willing to illustrate sports such as ' skateboarding, golfing, cycling, softball, etc. are needed. The float will be in keeping with the Par- ticipaction Challenge Day which is occurring on Wednesday, May 31.
