Despite being outplayed in many of their games, a solid defense and a quick counter-attack ena bled the team to defeat more skillful opponents and advance advance to tne championship match where they were unlucky unlucky to lose in a shoot-out. Saturday, May 20 Darlington-1 Chingacousy -0 A rainy miserably cool day kept ball control to a minimum and even though Chingacousy territory held a slight advantage a solid defensive defensive effort by all of the Darlington players on the field kept the opposition from getting many good goal scoring opportunities. In the 34th minute of play, a counter counter attack led to a goal off the foot of right wing Lonny Gibson. Kevin Mills fed Lon ny a run on pass between tne defenders and the winger winger made no mistake, beating the goalie with a hard shot to the near side of the net. In the second half, Chingacousy Chingacousy kept pressing for the equalizing goal but to no avail as the defense of Jonathan Jonathan Goad, Lance Haluka, Treffor Davies and sweeper Ken Davies kept the Chinga- Newcastle Ladies 9 Volleyball League Presents Trophies to Champs The Base Line Community Centre was filled Satur- aid, Lorraine Lever, Michelle Graham, Grace deVer- day night, May 27th for the annual banquet of the teuil, Lyne Puddister, Joan Montpetit, Sue Dion, Ka- Newcastle Ladies Volleyball League. Minutes before the end of the match, Jamie made a spectacular gamesaving gamesaving dive, robbing the Chingacousy forward of a goal and so the game ended 1-0 in favour of tne Darlington Darlington team. Niagara Falls 2 , Darlington Darlington 1 Later on in the afternoon with the rain still pouring down, Darlington met the tournament favorites from Niagara Falls. Although the opposition dominated the midfield they could not keep up a sustained attack and near the end of the first half Mike Ruthard scored on a dangerous cross from the right hand side which the defender put into the back of his own net. Niagara Falls came storming back in the second half and were fortunate fortunate to score two goals before before the end of the game. Darlington played very well as a team and were unfortunate unfortunate to lose the game under the circumstances. Sunday, May 21 Darlington 2 Guildwood 0 Darlington had to win this game in order to advance advance to the semi-finals and managed to come up with an impressive performance against one of the best teams in Ontario. The game started slowly with a "feeling "feeling out" period before Darlington Darlington slowly took the match away with strong midfield play by Brad Rickard, Rickard, Dayne Lycett , Treffor Davies and Carmine Capel- li. In the last minute of the first half, a free kick taken by Mike Ruthard was headed headed against the crossbar by Lonny Gibson and the rebound rebound was put away by Scott Hanthorn. Early on in the second half, Scott was taken down in the penalty box and Ken Davies made no mistake on the ensuing penalty shot. Jamie Martin again played a strong game in net and prevented any shots from crossing the goal line with consistent and secure secure ball handling. This was a well deserved win against a very strong team. Darlington 1 Dundas 0 Darlington now advanced to the semifinal playing a close marking game against a well màtdhed i side from Dundas. Strong winds made the ball difficult to play in the air and play was fairly even on both sides. Dundas hit the crossbar early on in the game and sweeper Ken Davies forced the Dundas keeper into making a good save from a long 35 yard shot. The game continued into the second half with both goalies and defenses keeping any scoring opportunities opportunities to a minimum. The 2nd half ended 0-0 and so the teams went into two 10 minute periods of overtime. In the last minute of play, Brad Rickard set up John Lawrence who hammered a first time volley into the back of the Dundas net with the goal keeper having no chance. Darlington thus advanced advanced to the championship game. Niagara Falls 1 Darlington 0 Darlington played tough against tne Niagara Falls team again but were fortunate fortunate to escape being down 1- 0 after 20 minutes of play. Darlington started gathering gathering momentum and a strong run by Ken Davies who passed to Lonny Gibson and then to Mike Ruthard saw the defender handle the ball in the penalty area to stop the attack. Ken Davies took the penalty shot and drove the ball past the beaten goalie. After the half the Darlington team got stronger stronger and stronger, keeping a frustrated Niagara Falls team off the scoreboard. Goalie Jamie Martin played an outstanding game, robbing robbing the opposition of any scoring opportunities. The game went into overtime tied 1-1 and it continued to be a tight game. After 20 minutes of overtime the game was still tied so each side took penalty shots. Darlington Darlington was unfortunate to lose the shootout and so the championship but certainly surprised many teams _ on their impressive showing. Some valuable experience was gained and confidence in knowing they can play with any team in the province. province.
