X % 1 12 The Canadian Statesman. Bowmanvillo, May 31.1989 Toastmasters Club Highlights Business The May 23rd meeting of Toastmasters International was chaired by Toastmaster Joan Winter. In her opening remarks she stated that the Dale Carnegie Public Speaking Speaking Course costs a good deal of money while allowing participants participants one speech and the opportunity to say their name each night. By comparison, comparison, Toastmasters permits permits members to participate actively at all meetings, deliver deliver a large number of speeches, ana charges only a nominal fee. Grammarian Pat Pingle's word was "polemic" meaning an aggressive verbal attack on a belief or doctrine. We, as Toastmasters, were urged not to engage in this type of response as our organization prides itself upon its encouragement encouragement and constructive h ni crn The theme of Table Topics Topics Master Margaret Kropf was The Criminal Justice System. Diverse subjects for one-minute speeches included included paying criminals in ex change for information, jailing jailing company heads if found guilty of air pollution, and the abuses of the Young Offenders Offenders Act. The award for best table topics went to Toastmaster Connie Nelson. Toastmaster Irene Kon- zelmann asked us to toast the Greek poet Homer's "winged words" - Homer loved words that would hurry hurry on wings, so to speak, from the lips of the speaker to the ear of the listener. He was trying to convey that a speech should make sense, that the message should be clear, and that we should use words everyone in the audience can understand. There was one speaker, Toastmaster Norm Broderick, Broderick, with a speech on the use of words. Toastmasters Kropf and Nelson made a presentation to the guests present on the value of Toastmasters to members of the business community and to private citizens. Among R< T the points highlighted were the benefits of Toastmasters in achieving promotion and in assisting with personal growth. It was stressed that after the completion of the basic manual and the achievement of Competent Toastmaster status, one may go on to become an Able Toastmaster at three different levels by completing completing advanced manual speeches and other projects, and may even achieve Distinguished Distinguished Toastmaster status. Toastmasters Kropf and Nelson stressed how im- ortant the support of fellow bastmasters nas been in fostering confidence and personal personal growth. The opportunities opportunities to participate in speaking both in an impromptu impromptu and a prepared speecn situation, with the constructive criticism of fellow fellow members, lead naturally to the flowering of communication communication skills. The presentation presentation concluded with an invitation invitation to four fellow Toastmasters, some very ex- erienced and others new to 'oastmasters, to share the E ositive experiences of mem- ership in the organization. Best evaluator and spark plug awards went to Toastmaster Toastmaster Pat Pingle. Hers was an audience evaluation in which we were asked to briefly record on a sheet the main idea of the speech, any grammar irregularities, and three general strengths and weaknesses. These were then synthesized into a two to three minute evaluation.
