PresbyterianWomen Meet F or Annual Spring Rally The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanvillc, May 31.1089 5 Members of Peterborough Presbyterian Women's Missionary Missionary Society met in St. Andrew's, Burnbrae, on Wednesday, May 17, 1989 for the Spring Rally and were warmly welcomed by the President Mrs. Audrey Jeffery, Cobourg, and the Reverend Morrison Campbell, Campbell, Campbellford on behalf of St. Andrew's and Peterborough Peterborough Presbytery. Three ladies Rena Wilson, Wilson, Alma Fredricks and Phyllis Lake from St. Paul's j Peterborough, conducted the worship service. Synodi cal reports were given by Marion Hay, Burnbrae, Kass Whitefield, Cobourg, Faye MacMillan, Havelock; and Holly Hall, Centerville. These ladies had attended the 42nd Annual Meeting of Toronto-Kingston Synodical in Stayner, Ontario. Their reports were very interesting interesting and enthusiastic. Three Burnbrae ladies-Joan Bil- lan, Sharon Nelson and Louise Campbell sang "The Longer I Serve Him" accompanied accompanied by Fern Rutherford. She observed observed some of the work being being done by Alfa Lit. an organization dedicated to bringing education and a better life to the people of this area. The guest speaker was Mr. Stan de Voogd who has taught and worked in Central Central America for eight years. He worked for Alfa Lit in El Salvador and Nicaragua. He told of the terrible effects the long years of war have had on the people in these countries. Alfa Lit is an agency made up mostly of volunteers from local churches who realize the importance importance of being able to read and write. Alfa Lit trains these volunteers who return to their villages to teach others. Agricultural education is very important to the peasant farmers. Lively singsongs were led by Faye MacMillan, Havelock, Havelock, and Jackie Kelly, Norwood. Norwood. Faye and Jackie are leading the music at the 75th anniversary celebrations celebrations in London Ontario later later this month. The Fall Rally is to be a one day retreat on Saturday, September 30 at Ganaraska Woods Farm, near Garden Hill. Register before June 15 with Kass Whitefield. ' Mrs. Jean Abrams spoke about Armagh. This house is being renovated and turned, into a women's shelter and many seemingly unnecessary unnecessary objections are being raised by people in the area. April after completing the' first seminar of the Advanced Advanced Agricultural Leadership Leadership Program. The AALP was initiated by the Ontario Federation of Agriculture, the Foundation of Rural Living, the University University of Guelph, and the Ontario Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food with funding from the public and private sec- t°rs. ' The program aims to fill the need for future leaders in Ontario's agricultural community. Participants will learn to deal with issues fljjph as changing consumer perceptions and needs, free trade, globalization of markets, markets, agriculture and the environment, environment, supply management, management, and many others presently facing rural communities communities and businesses. During the Guelph seminar seminar participants focussed on leadership skills and on how to adapt their own leadership leadership style to the needs of the group. They emphasized in volvement and commitment. The seminar also included visits to ARC industries and the Guelph Correctional Centre. These visits served as a stimulus for discussion and debate about issues in the community as participants participants ouickly became acquainted acquainted with each other. The next stage of the program program takes place in Sudbury in July. Durham College Announces $600 Scholarships Durham College announces announces ON Scholarships for women, worth $600.00 each for the fall semester. The scholarships, aimed at encouraging women to seek careers in non traditional traditional fields, are awarded regardless regardless of any other financial financial assistance obtained by applicants and may be used by recipients to ease financial financial requirements during their studies. ON defines a non- traditional field for women as "a technical and/or skilled trade occupation in which the participation of women has, to date, been limited or non-existent". Examples of such work are welding, engineering engineering technology and precision precision machining. Application forms for the scholarships are available from Durham College..
