On Wednesday, June 7th, the Gowan Pontiac Junior Soccer Team played host to a much improved Scarborough Scarborough Malvern club, and used the opportunity to take one further step in reestablishing reestablishing their early season season form by ' battling to a draw with the determined TIRE SALES INC. 576-1220 KUMHO STEEL BELTED RADIAL 781 ALL SEASON 299 Dean Ave., Oshawa Malvern squad. The opening half of the game was characterized by a tentative feeling out period, which the Cowan Pontiacs slowly turned into a slight territorial advantage and some excellent scoring chances, only to see them selves robbed by a very competent competent Malvern netminder. Well taken shots by Kevin Mills, Scott Hanthorn and Brad Rickard missed the target by only inches, and the guests were lucky to end the half with a scoreless tie, since they were held to a single shot on net by the Darlington backliners, where "rookie" Carmine Cu- pelli played a strong game In the Left Back position. The second naif quickly developed into a more opened up contest and in the 61st minute the guests were rewarded for their efforts by a penalty shot, following their only penetration into the Darlington penalty area and a "converted" obstrue, tion call by a sympathetic referree. Jamie Martin, in goal for the Darlington club, was left with no chance on the well placed shot by the opposing centre forward. With their backs square to the wall, the Cowan Pontiacs Pontiacs now showed some "old time" determination and quickly took advantage of ttie euphoria amongst the Malvern eleven, who couldn't quite believe their good fortune, by equalizing only a minute later, when Mike Ruthard placed a long ball behind the Malvern defence defence and the inrushing Scott Hanthorn beat the keeper with a courageous header. With the knowledge that the opposing goalie was beatable after all and some strong supporting runs by their midfielders and back four, inspired by Lance Ha- luka ana Brad Rickard, the Cowan Pontiacs now started to regain field advantage, but once again were not able to convert a number of good chances. Even though the score sheet did not reflect it, the Darlington club ended the game on a strong and positive positive note, serving notice that they are determined to turn their "mini-slump" around and remain a serious challenger challenger for the league title. Good luck in your next encounter on June 14th against Wexford. Submitted by W. Ruthard. Ruthard. 656.
