The answer of course is obvious - at least to me. To the average reader who has never been involved in writing a pithy, interesting, interesting, challenging, witty treatise treatise each week, the task is beyond their comprehension. Even writing a diatribe like ours with mixed metaphors, dangling participles and the challenge of remembering never to use a preposition to end a sentence with, (with or without a verb) Anyhow, while mulling over a suitable topic for a forthcoming article and simultaneously simultaneously being up to our armpits in potato peelings peelings white dong our share of the spuds for tne potato salads salads for our Pork B. B. Cue, - a mere 20 lbs, inspiration struck us. The answer, if you'll pardon the pun, was right at our fingertips, literally literally speaking. Just how many methods are there in accomplishing thi"s mundane chore? My late mother was an artisan with a paring knife. Of course she had a special knife for that purpose. Just like my late, or early father, couldn't eat his porridge without his special spoon, likewise mother and her knife. Just in passing why in Hades has "knife" got a "K" in it? Sure it looks funny without it "Nife" but outside of its aesthetic appearance, just what does that "K" contribute contribute to the scheme of things? I guess the same could be said about our weekly hobnobbing - perish the thought. My late mother-in-law on the other side of the coin - . the Dutch Guilder of course, used a real toad-stabber for peeling potatoes and every other culinary exercise as well. Naturally, to be in the close confines of a small kitchen while Mrs. "B" was cavorting through the vegetables, vegetables, was an exercise in living dangerously. Certain- ' ly, this son-in-law never gave her any lip while she was weilding her two foot scimator-like a mad Russian at a Cossack revolution. Nary a word of criticism l pounds of po- , r divided, 5 Ids. of nude potatoes and 5 lbs. of peelings. Mrs. B didn't peel potatoes, she squared them off! Anyhow, back to the art of potato peeling. On the first pailful, we were reasonably reasonably careful and meticulous in our paring. All of this was done out on the porch under the shining rays of old Sol with a chorus of mosquitoes providing background music. music. By the time we were into our second pailful, the heat of the sun necessitated the removal of the top of our leisure leisure suit - (just the top)! Guess we should have taken that monster potato out of our left hand and the paring knife out of our right hand. Would you believe that we opened the seam from top to bottom on our right arm? Not that gullible eh! This of course brought on the horde of mosquitoes. Another word of advice. Never ever try to slap a mosquito mosquito with a paring knife in your hand. Just when we were nicely recovering from stabbing ourselves in the palm of the hand with a sharp screw-driver while tightening a garden hose. Another stupid activity we wouldn't recommend. To bring our harangue to a close, a kindly great grandmother mosquito viewed our anaemic body and instead of tanking up on what was left, gave us a blood transfusion instead. Unfortunately, I think she got it from our dog. Because ever since, we have had the uncontrollable urge to grovel and show our teeth at strangers, not to mention an unspeakable desire to do certain unspeakable things to the wheels of every new Porsche we come near. Celebrating 12th of July On July .1, 1690, William Prince of Orange won a 'Glorious 'Glorious Victory' on the 'Banks of the Boyne' in Ireland. The reverberations of this Victory' Victory' are still felt today, and it is perhaps the oldest "Battle" "Battle" still annually celebrated in the world. There is good reason to celebrate as, from this Victory 1 stems the modern modern democratic world. The free and enlightened society we cherish so dearly today has its roots on the banks of that obscure Irish river.
