They were playing Belleville and came close in the bottom of the 9th, losing by one run, 14- 13.....' " Belleville got off to a fast start, leading 5-2 after only two innings and 8 to 6 after five had passed. The 9th frame was the big one. Belleville score six runs to lead 14-6, but the Orioles stormed back in their half with seven and had the tying run on third. Sadly for the locals, he didn't make it to home plate before the third out. Randy Reid started on the mound for the Orioles, but was relieved in the second second after giving up five runs. Dave Pairey took over and finished the game For the Orioles, the offensive offensive stars were Kevin Smith with a double, and two triples triples in the bottom of the ninth and Derek Zander with three hits, including two singles and a double. ROSSLAND ADFI AIDE "HWY40r After several weeks of fine, though humid, weather the rain, long awaited by farmers and garden lovers, came at the wrong time for the Garter Family lawn bowling tournament on July 26/89. At that, we were lucky to have completed two games before a heavy downpour downpour put an end to the competition competition in the afternoon. Gordon Terwillegar must have read the Bowmanville greens better than all other competitors for this was the second tournament in succession succession that he won. This time he was partnered by his wife Anne and scored 35 plus 2 for the two games to win by a small margin over Ned Town and Edythe Charles of Port Hope (33 plus 4). In the absence on vacation vacation of our President Frank Parise, Vice-President Oscar Wollstein welcomed the 16 teams of mixed pairs from Cobourg, Oshawa, Port Hope, Whitby and Bowmanville. Bowmanville. At the close of play, Oscar thanked Clarence Oke, representing the Carter Carter Family of Bowmanville for providing the delicious refreshments and presenting presenting the trophy and prizes. Gordon (I feel that by this time I know him well enough not to have to apologize apologize for using his first name) was leading nis Cobourg opponents, opponents, Jetty Thompson and Marg Connell, by only one point after 5 ends but scored almost at will in the remaining 7 ends to reach 18 plus 2 against 4. This total was exceeded by Art and Irene Cartwright ^ jainst Cyril and Mary oldcroft of Whitby to win by 18 plus 5 to 4. Holdcroft's score was made in two ends only - the 9th (three) and 11th (one). In the second game, Gordon Gordon was matched against Cartwright and after a close game for five ends, scored 5 to lead 9-3. Cartwright got only one more point but Gordon Gordon ran his score up to 17 for a total of 35 plus 2, enough to win the trophy. In the meantime, Ned Town of Port Hope had a comfortable win (15-6) over Bob Cameron and Muriel Scott of Bowmanville in the first game. After lunch he almost almost "skunked" Scotty Boyle and Marg Perris of Bowmanville Bowmanville who scored a single point on the last end against 18 plus 4 for Town. Town's total of 33 plus 4 gave him the runner-up prize. ' Other two-game prize winners were Jack Rowland and Dorothy Stabbing of Port Hope with 27 points and Orval and Margaret Atkinson Atkinson of Whitby with 25. Ken and Ella Dawson of Oshawa won the prize for high one-game winner with 26 plus 5 after putting together together 8 against Vic Foxhall and Helen Cane of Cobourg (18 plus 1) and 18 plus 5 Darlington Youth Soccer League Tyke Results FINAL CLEARANCE SALE ON ABOVE GROUND POOLS Limited Quantities and Sizes GP July 20 W L T GF GA Pts 9 8 0 1 62 12 17 9 6 1 2 56 24 14 9 7 2 0 57 22 14 9 6 1 2 52 16 14 9 7 2 0 46 16 14 9 6 3 0 45 19 12 9 6 3 0 27 24 12 9 5 4 0 34 33 10 9 4 4 1 42 25 9 9 4 5 0 34 33 8 9 4 5 0 21 40 8 9 3 6 0 35 61 6 9 2 7 0 32 33 4 9 0 9 0 10 48 0 9 0 9 0 4 52 0 9 0 9 0 7 103 0 10 8 1 1 46 13 17 10 8 2 0 39 7 16 10 7 1 2 '37 9 16 10 7 2 1 44 13 15 10 6 1 3 40 15 15 10 6 2 2 34 18 14 10 5 3 2 23 23 12 9 4 3 2 37 19 10 10 4 5 1 31 22 9 10 3 5 2 23 33 8 10 3 6 1 11 21 7 10 2 6 2 13 32 6 9 2 6 1 10 16 5 10 2 8 0 8 54 4 10 1 8 1 9 65 3 10 0 9 1 9 54 1 Blue Jays .Cpurtice A Eagles " Orioles Newcastle A Falcons Hampton Ravens Hawks Courtice B Tyrone Owls Newcastle B Cardinals Condors Solina Squirts OHECLocal 1000 Beaver Lumber Gerlin 1/4 Horses Hampton Courtice B Lange's Photo Lab Shoppers Drug OronoB Tyrone Newcastle A Newcastle B Wallace Auto Courtice A Orono A Heavy Haulers Solina Results from games the week of July 17 Tyke Division Bow Hawks 5 Bow Owls 4, Newcastle A 7 Courtice A 3, Hampton 6 Ravens 4 Courtice B 4 Orioles 3, Falcons Falcons 6 Condors 0, Blue Jays 10 Cardinals 2. Fox- hall was only just behind Dawson with a total score of 25 plus one and won the last prize. Clarence Oke and Vi Coole had the best score (20 for one win) among the three Bowmanville teams. Their win in the first game was on an extra end against George and Doreen Jackson of Oshawa in which ' they scored one point on each of the last three ends to tie it up at 9 each and go on to win. Whether Town would have beaten Gordon if the third game had been played will never be known but it was an enjoyable day for all in spite of the rain. Our last tournament of the season - the Les Langs Trophy for Men's Pairs - will be played on Wednesday, August 16, but we hope to report news of our regular activities before before then. Norm Smith.
