I 20 The Canadian Statesman. Bowmanvillc. August 2,1980 Smith F amily Holds Picnic The annual Smith family picnic was held at Orono Park on July 23rd, with 105 in attendance. It was a lovely lovely summer day and all enjoyed enjoyed themselves. After consuming a sumptuous sumptuous dinner, the games were run by Linda Hoar and Sharyn Smith. The children also enjoyed the swimming pool. During the business meeting, it was decided to hold next year's picnic at the same lovely spot. The oldest person there was Percy Smith, 84, of Col- borne and the youngest was little Craig Smith, one month old, of Tyrone. After the enjoyable get- together, everyone returned home happy. OBITUARIES Margaret A. Carruthers The death of Margaret A. Carruthers occurred on Friday, Friday, July 14,1989, in Memorial Memorial Hospital, Bowmanville. In her 78th year, she had been in declining health for a number of years. Born in Inverness, Quebec, Quebec, she was the younger daughter of the late Reverend Reverend Jacob Ira Hughes and Margaret Elizabeth Corkill. Mrs. Carruthers attended schools in Stanstead and Huntingdon, Quebec, and graduated from Kemptville Agricultural School in the Household Science Course, and from Kingston General Hospital, as a Registered Nurse. She was married July 25, 1934, to the late Wilfrid Carruthers. former Mayor of Bowmanville. Margaret was a helpmate husband's ÊÊm in all of her husband s endeavors endeavors and a true homemaker homemaker and mother to their children. She took great pleasure in her family and grandchildren. A devoted member of St. Paul's United Church, Bowmanville, Bowmanville, she took part in the work of the church, and later, when she was no longer longer able to attend, followed the services through recorded recorded tapes and visits of her minister, the Reverend N.E. Schamerhorn. . The funeral service .was conducted by Mr. Schamerhorn, Schamerhorn, on Monday, at the Northcutt Elliott Funeral Home, Bowmanville. He paid tribute to Mrs. Carruthers, Carruthers, for her fortitude and to her sister Edna Hughes for the devoted care and companionship she had given to Mrs. Carruthers during her disability. Left to mourn her passing passing are her daughter Betty and husband Keith Smith, Cambridge, son Bob Carruthers Carruthers and wife Pat, Bowmanville Bowmanville her sister Edna Hughes of Bowmanville, six grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Pallbearers were Messrs Douglas Kemp, Rae Aber- nethy, 1 James Martin, Donald Donald McGregor, and grandsons grandsons / Russell and Steven Carruthers. Interment Bowmanville Cemetery. Dorothy Jean Audrey Cochrane Three days before her 71st birthday, Dorothy Jean Audrey Cochrane, died suddenly suddenly in her home 18 Frank Street, Bowmanville, on Tuesday, July 11, 1989. She had suffered heart problems for five years. Daughter of John S. Wade and Mary Holdaway, she was bom in Clarke Township east of Newton- ville. She had been a resident resident in Newcastle, at 274 Mill Street, South for many years. Mrs. Cochrane was educated educated at Port Granby School and Nursing College where she graduated as a Regis- terea Nursing Assistant. For approximately 30 years she was employed at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Toronto, from 1958-1960 at South Haven Nursing Home, and from 1960-1983 at Memorial Hospital, Bowmanville, Bowmanville, retiring six years ago. She was an active member member of St. George's Anglican Church, Newcastle, and a member of the Ladies Auxiliary Auxiliary to the Royal Canadian Legion, the Order of the Eastern Star, the Liberal Party, and past president of St. George's Altar Guild. In her retirement she enjoyed enjoyed trips to Florida, to the United Kingdom, in 1988, and last year celebrated her 70th birthday with a large get to-gether. Surviving are her son Gordon Cochrane, brothers Jack and Harry Wade, three nephews, two great grand nieces and one great grand nephew. Funeral services were held on Thursday at the Morris Funeral Chapel, Bowmanville, with the Reverend Reverend Douglas Hall, Newcastle, Newcastle, officiating, Pallbearers were Messrs, Warren Tait, Jack Chard, Michael Wade, Aubrey Sawl- cr, Ron Shnckleton and' David David Bryant. A floral tribute from the Legion Ladies Auxiliary was received in her memory.
