Mr. and Mrs. Charles Harris Kirby, entertained at a delicious pork barbecue on Sunday, for approximately 40-50 immediate families and friends. Mr. and Mrs. 0. Challice entertained the judges Mr. and Mrs. A1 Foss, West Hill, Thursday evening, after the afternoon judging. A gentle reminder to all church adherents of Orono, Newcastle and Kirby United churches, of our annual corn and weiner Roast, Wednesday Wednesday evening, August 30, at the home of Grant, Carol and Christopher Yeo. New homes are much in view around our town, several several on Cobb Hill and a new one on Station Str., near Orono Fuel and Lumber. The large house (our former home) owned by Mrs. Victoria Victoria Ullman is now sporting a sold sign. The residents on Church Str. south are really up to their ears in dust and noise, from all the construction on their streets. Summer Shows Despite a very dry summer, summer, Orono horticulture societies, societies, both Sr. and Jr. served up a very large show on Thursday i August 10, in Orono United Church. The Jr. society leaders, Mrs. Zegers and Mrs. Jo Harris were delighted at the large turnout of Jr. exhibitors exhibitors and 125 entries of high quality entries. The dish "flower gardens" were most colorful and the feature exhibit exhibit was created by a member member Sandra DeVries of New- tonville, this being the "Bride and Groom", from flowers. A very imaginative work of art! The Sr. show was a terrific terrific success, with 23 exhibitors exhibitors and 259 entries. The flowers were as usual lovely and the vegetable exhibit gave the judges areal chore. The beets, carrots and potatoes potatoes were exceptionally good, as were all classes. The Special awards were as follows: Best Red Rose - Donna Hutton, Best Dahlia - Mary Tamblyn, Best Gladiolus - Minnie Zegers, New exhibitor exhibitor with most points - Martha Martha Farrow, New exhibitor - Mrs. Gladys Greenwood, Best Arrangement in show - Carol Mostert, Judges choice - Carol Mostert, Most Points in Cut Flowers - Maty Tamblyn, Tamblyn, Most points in Vegetables Vegetables - Carol Mostert, Most points in Decorative - Isabelle Isabelle Challice. Most Points in entire show, won by Carol Mostert but did not qualify for Bank of Commerce Trophy and next points winners were Orono Horticulturists Hold Annual Summer Show The Junior Gardeners had an outstanding show as part of Orono Horticultural Society's major summer event last week. Prize winners with their unusual presentations and other members who joined in the photo opportunity were, 1-r, Sandra DeVries, Katrina two ladies (first time this has happened) Mary Tamblyn Tamblyn ana Lorna Atkins. Our judges were former district director of Dist #17 Mr. and Mrs. A1 Foss, West Hill. In the evening Mrs. Foss gave a very excellent display of floral design and much enjoyed by all present. A delightful sing-along with Gladys Brown at the piano ana a tasty lunch served by the Committee brought another show to a close. Our next big event will of course, be our Sunday Flower Flower Service on September 17, where flowers will be sent out to sick and shut-ins in community. Family Picnic The families of O. Chal- lice's and John Killeen's held their Annual picnic this year in Selwyn Conservation Park (near Bridgenorth). Although Although the family crowd was considerably down in numbers, approximately 30 in attendance. The young crowd enjoyed swimming early and then all joined in for the races and games.
