Joan Murphy YBC Program Director Liberty Bowl A good crowd was on hand Sunday evening at the Complex to see the Ajax Axemen in action against the Goodyear Eagles. There was plenty of exciting, fast- After the abundance of year boys their only lead of penalties called one week ago Sunday, the officials obviously obviously gave their whistle a rest this past weekend allowing allowing many infractions to go unpenalized. Whether this affected the Eagles' ef- fiency it's hard to say. Last Friday our Jr. C. contingent played a return game with Uxbridge in the Bruins' Den. Uxbridge appears appears to be a fast skating,. disciplined team and they used it to full advantage in outplaying and out hustling the Eagles 6-3. It was a shoot out at the Uxbridge corral for the first 10 minutes. The Bruins potted potted the first marker just 12 seconds into the game, only to have Glen Campbell reply for Bowmanville from Neil Taylor .and Nick Dennis. Four minutes later, the Bruins hit again, with Chris Shmyr evening it within a minute from Dennis, and Campbell. At the 10:51 mark Shmyr gave the Good-- moving play as this photo indicates, with the Eagles coming through with an 8-4 win. On Sunday,, October 1st, a coaches clinic was held at the Orono Arena. Five Orono Orono club members took part. They were Allan McKenzie, Mary Murphy, Melanie Lemieux, Lemieux, Anthea Peacock and Angela Tompkins. It was a very worthwhile day for all who participated. The experience experience will help them as they work with the Junior skaters. Our first cheese drive is now underway. Forms have been handed out to all families. families. The cheese drive has been well received in the past and we anticipate another another successful campaign. Please have order forms completed by Tuesday, October October 24 th. the game on an unassisted goal. It took Uxbridge less than a minute to even the score and they never looked back, notching the winner at 14:41, adding one in the second second and one in thé third. Ian Cooper was particularly sharp in the early stages of the third period when the Eagles were two men short. Back in the Eagles nest on Sunday the Goodyear crew hosted Ajax. The Eagles Eagles displayed some impressive impressive puck control on their power plays and were extremely extremely effective with their penalty killing. Brian Taylor and Joe Mclnnis have spent a lot of time on their specialty specialty units, which has produced excellent results. Now, if everyone pulls their weight in even strength situations, this will be a team to be reckoned with. The Eagles skated to a 8- 4 victory with two power plays, and one shorthanded goal. One of Ajax's goals was a result of too much stick; handling in the Eagles' defensive defensive zone and another from not picking up the loose man. Ajax opened the scoring on a power play but John Hartford evened the count on passes from Neil Taylor and Jeff Reynolds. Campbell made it 2-1 in the first on a power play marker from Rekker and Chris Shmyr. To start the second Shmyr, Pithie and Hartford earned a shorthanded goal with Chris pulling the trigger. trigger. Ajax tallied their second goal just at the end of a man advantage. The Goodyear crew notched three more before before the second frame was over. Jeff Reynolds scored from Taylor and K. Armstrong; Armstrong; Nick Dennis a power-play power-play marker from George Pitnie and Dean Baumhauer and Brad Robinson from Shane Armstrong and George Pithie. The home town boys and the Axemen traded a pair of goals in the third. George Pithie Pithie notched one from Shawn Rekker and (I thought Baumhauer) Shane Armstrong. Chris Shmyr closed out the scoring converting converting passes from Kelly Armstrong and Nick Dennis. The Eagles outshot the Axeman 46-24. Around The Eagles Nest: A new press pen has been constructed behind the timekeepers timekeepers bench, but you can't see out of it, so statistician Eleanor Colwell had to stand on a bench the entire game. I'm sure a platform is forthcoming. As I said the specialty units have been effective but I'm sure Brian and Joe can see room for improvement, so make good use of practice, practice, boys. Our goal tenders Cooper and Webster, (sounds like a plumbing partnership) have performed well between the pipes, with neither of them picking up any penalties. Keep it up noys. The Eagles were in Co- bourg Monday, October 9 and Port Perry Mojacks visit the Goodyear Eagles nest on Saturday October 14. No game Sunday. Heritage House Atoms Capture Close Contest In our final exhibition game before season play begins, begins, Heritage House Atom Toros hosted Stouffville Clippers at the Darlington Sports Centre on October 7,' 1989. After a scoreless first period period the visitors took a 1-0 lead late in the second. Toros Toros rebounded with 2 ouick goals before the end of the second, the first by Paul La- vallee, the second by Greg McMurter, both unassisted. Play in the third period went back and forth with each team having several scoring chances only to be foiled by solid defense and good goal tending. Finally, with less than 3 minutes to go, Toros scored the clincher on a pretty passing play. Mark Framp- ton was set up on the right wing by Robbie Jeffers and Greg McMurter and made no mistake with a quick shot. Final score 3-1 in favour favour of Toros. League play begins Saturday Saturday October 14, 1989' and the Major Atom home games are at 1:00 p.m. every Saturday Saturday at the Darlington Sports Centre.
